Overview

Befesa closes resource loops by collecting hazardous waste and residues, recycling them and reintroducing valuable materials into the production process. Its business model is a full-service approach to waste management for the steel and aluminium industries, covering collection and treatment of hazardous waste and residues — mainly steel dust and salt slags — from customers' facilities. The company operates through two business units: Steel Dust Recycling Services, which recovers zinc as Zinc Oxide or Waelz Oxide (WOX), and Aluminium Salt Slags Recycling Services, which recycles salt slags and SPLs and produces secondary aluminium alloys. Befesa states its recycling plants are strategically located across Europe, Asia and North America, and that it has been part of the circular economy for more than three decades.

History

Befesa traces its activities and achievements to its inception in 1987, when the German industrial conglomerate Metallgesellschaft created Berzelius Umwelt Service (B.U.S). In 1993 Berzelius Umwelt Service grouped its Spanish assets into Berzelius Felguera (Befesa). In 2006 Befesa acquired the remaining stake in BUS, becoming European leader in electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) recycling, and in 2009 it became European leader in salt slags recycling after acquiring Agor AG's German assets. In 2010 it entered the Turkish market through a 51/49 joint venture with Canadian Silvermet, and in 2012 it entered the Asian market by acquiring subsequent stakes in the Korean Hankook WOX washing plant at Gravelines. A secondary aluminium plant in Bernburg followed in 2014, and in 2016 capacity was doubled to 220kt in Gyeongju, South Korea. Befesa completed a successful IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2017, entered the SDAX on 24 September 2018, and reached a 100% free float after Triton's exit on 6 June 2019. In 2019 it started its first WOX washing plant in Asia, close to the Gyeongju plant, and expanded EAFD recycling capacity at Iskenderun to 110 kt. Since 18 September 2020 it has been a member of the Global challenge index. In 2021 it started a first EAFD recycling plant in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China, with a total capacity of 110kt, and a second EAFD recycling plant in Xuchang, Henan, with a total capacity of 110kt.
