Overview
BBC Knowledge was an international television channel built around factual, educational and non-fiction entertainment programming from the BBC and independent British production companies. It was wholly owned and distributed internationally by the BBC's commercial television business, now known as BBC Studios. The channel should be distinguished from an earlier UK digital channel also called BBC Knowledge, which closed in 2002 and was replaced by BBC Four and CBeebies. The international service was a separate global brand and was not a domestic continuation of that earlier UK channel. The international BBC Knowledge service launched first in Singapore on 29 July 2007 through mio TV. It subsequently expanded across Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, with launches or carriage arrangements in markets including Hong Kong, Poland, Indonesia, South Africa, Scandinavia, Australia, South Korea, Romania, Italy, New Zealand and Turkey. Distribution was generally secured through pay-television operators and digital satellite, cable or IPTV platforms rather than through a single worldwide feed with identical availability everywhere. The channel's regional footprint therefore changed over time as carriage agreements were negotiated, replaced or terminated. Its editorial proposition was to make BBC factual programming easy to navigate through recurring programming strands. These included The World, covering culture and geography; Science & Technology; People, focused on human biology and psychology; The Past, dedicated to history; and Business, examining economics and commercial life. The wider schedule combined natural-history series, science documentaries, history, travel, engineering, technology, current affairs, lifestyle and factual entertainment. Examples associated with the channel included Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, Earthflight, Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of Life, Top Gear, James May's Toy Stories, Human Universe, Great Barrier Reef, Ocean Giants, Deadly 60, Simon Reeve travel programs and other BBC factual productions. BBC Knowledge also served as a vehicle for international exploitation of the BBC's program catalogue. Its schedule could include titles commissioned for BBC channels in the United Kingdom alongside programs acquired from independent producers. In some markets the service carried locally specific schedules and carriage arrangements. In June 2009, for example, the BBC ended its agreement with SingTel's mio TV because of insufficient viewership and moved carriage of BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle and CBeebies to StarHub TV from August that year. The brand was gradually replaced by BBC Earth, a newer factual-entertainment channel with a stronger natural-history and premium documentary identity. BBC Studios announced the planned rollout of BBC Earth in 2014. Poland became the first market to launch the replacement brand, on 1 February 2015, while BBC Knowledge continued in selected territories where it remained commercially successful. In New Zealand, BBC Knowledge was replaced by a localized BBC Earth service on 22 October 2018. Australia's final BBC Knowledge service relaunched as a localized BBC Earth channel on 10 October 2019, ending use of the BBC Knowledge name after approximately twelve years of international distribution.
History
BBC Knowledge was created as an international factual television proposition of the BBC's commercial distribution business. It launched in Singapore on 29 July 2007 through mio TV and expanded rapidly through agreements with pay-TV operators. Hong Kong received the service later in 2007, while Poland, Indonesia and South Africa followed between late 2007 and 2008. The channel also entered Scandinavian distribution in November 2008, replacing BBC Prime on Canal Digital and other cable systems. Australia received the service through Foxtel and Optus Television on 1 November 2008, and South Korean distribution began in December 2008 with further expansion in 2009. The service's model depended on local platform partnerships. This produced a varied international footprint rather than uniform global availability. In June 2009, the BBC ended its mio TV carriage deal in Singapore, citing weak viewership, and moved BBC Knowledge and associated BBC channels to StarHub TV from 1 August. The channel continued to expand elsewhere, including Romania in 2010, New Zealand in 2011 after the sale of the Documentary Channel to BBC Studios, Italy in 2011, Turkey in 2013 and Fetch TV in Australia in 2015. Editorially, BBC Knowledge grouped factual content into recognizable subject areas covering the world, science and technology, people, history and business. Its schedule drew on the BBC's globally recognized natural-history and documentary catalogue, while also carrying travel, engineering, lifestyle and factual-entertainment programs. The channel therefore operated both as a television destination and as an international window for BBC Studios' program brands. From 2014, BBC Studios began positioning BBC Earth as the successor brand for much of this factual portfolio. BBC Earth was intended to provide a more focused and internationally consistent identity, especially around natural history and high-end factual programming. The transition was staged by territory rather than completed simultaneously. Poland changed first in 2015, New Zealand followed in 2018, and Australia completed the replacement in October 2019. With the Australian relaunch, BBC Knowledge ceased to be used as an active channel brand. It remains historically distinct from the former UK BBC Knowledge digital channel, which closed in 2002.
