Overview

BB-MV Lokal-TV (also known as BB-MV-LokalTV, BB-Lokal-TV, and Brandenburg lokal-TV) was a joint satellite channel for local television broadcasters from the German states of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was a project of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb), the media authority for the Berlin-Brandenburg region, with technical operations handled by SES Astra. The channel launched on 13 September 2013 and was initially limited to three years. It broadcast daily in 30-minute windows, originally between 17:00 and 23:00, and later expanded to 24-hour broadcasting. The channel was distributed via satellite on ASTRA 19.2° East, and could also be received via local cable networks and various internet platforms. At its peak, the platform carried local programs from Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin. After the withdrawal of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern broadcasters in September 2018, the channel was renamed and moved to Astra transponder 23 in mid-November 2018, with broadcasting hours extended to 24 hours. From 1 January 2019, local broadcasters from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern officially rejoined. The channel ceased broadcasting on 1 January 2021. The project aimed to increase the reach of local television, particularly in rural areas, and was funded by the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) and the Ministry of Economics, Labour and Health of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

History

BB-MV Lokal-TV was established as a joint project of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) to support the distribution of local TV programs from Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The channel started on 13 September 2013 and was originally limited to three years. It broadcast daily between 17:00 and 23:00 in 30-minute windows. With the participation of the Medienanstalt Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, seven broadcasters from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and two from Berlin were formerly available on this shared platform. Before satellite distribution, reception of the participating broadcasters was essentially only possible via cable. Similar projects to increase reach existed for Bavaria with ONTV (2002–2012) and LokalSAT (2004–2012). After the withdrawal of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern broadcasters in September 2018, the channel name was changed. In mid-November 2018, the channel moved to Astra transponder 23, with broadcasting hours extended to 24 hours. From 1 January 2019, local broadcasters from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were officially back on board. All programs could also be received via local cable networks and various internet platforms, making satellite distribution dispensable for most program providers. BB-MV-LokalTV ceased broadcasting on 1 January 2021.
