Overview

The Bayerischer Waldbesitzerverband (Bavarian Forest Owners Association) is a registered association (eingetragener Verein) that serves as the professional and political representation of forest owners in Bavaria, Germany. According to its own statements, it advocates for the sustainable management of forests across their entire area, aiming to secure a livelihood for owners while preserving all forest functions for society and future generations. The association is headquartered in Munich, with a supplementary office for Northern Bavaria in Scheßlitz near Bamberg, opened in 2018. It directly and indirectly organizes around 170,000 forest owners. The association was first founded in 1918 under the name Bayerischer Waldbesitzerverband, dissolved in 1934, and re-established on 6 September 1945 with permission from the American military government as the Landesverband für den Bayerischen Nichtstaatswald. In 1964, it was renamed back to Bayerischer Waldbesitzerverband. Franz Freiherr von Perfall was a co-founder and chairman from 1932 until the dissolution in 1934, and again from 1946 until his resignation in 1954. The association's activities include political advocacy for forest owners' interests, promoting sustainable forestry, providing information on forest management, climate protection, and wood as a renewable resource. Its website features sections on forest news, experiencing the forest, forest owners, Bavaria's forested area (over 2.6 million hectares, one third of the state), climate, care, enjoyment, PEFC certification, and partners. It also lists self-help institutions for forest owners and links to further partners. The Bayerischer Waldbesitzerverband is a membership-based organization, not a commercial company, but it functions as a brand representing the interests of private and communal forest owners in Bavaria. It engages in public relations, political lobbying, and educational activities related to forestry.
