Overview

Bayerische CargoBahn GmbH (BCB) was a German railway undertaking (Eisenbahnverkehrsunternehmen, EVU) founded on 10 May 2001 in Holzkirchen, Bavaria, as a subsidiary of Connex Cargo Logistics GmbH. It began freight operations on 28 February 2002 and was licensed for freight transport from 16 November 2001 and for passenger transport from 14 March 2003. In 2005 it took over a large part of the long-distance freight services of Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG) and moved its base to Neu-Ulm. It also held a network access permit for freight in Switzerland, where it was responsible for the Swiss partner Transalpin Eisenbahn AG of Captrain Deutschland GmbH. On 19 August 2015, BCB was merged retroactively to 1 January 2015 with TWE Bahnbetriebs GmbH (TWEBB) to form Captrain Deutschland CargoWest GmbH. The BCB brand ceased to exist as a separate entity, though the Neu-Ulm location was retained. The merged company continues to operate rail freight services in Germany and cross-border to France, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.

History

Bayerische CargoBahn GmbH (BCB) was founded on 10 May 2001 in Holzkirchen, Bavaria, as a subsidiary of Connex Cargo Logistics GmbH. It obtained its licence as a railway undertaking for freight transport on 16 November 2001 and began freight operations on 28 February 2002. On 14 March 2003 it also received a passenger transport licence; both licences were valid until 1 December 2016. On 1 January 2005, BCB took over a large part of the long-distance freight services of Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG). In August 2005, the company relocated its base to Neu-Ulm because it was more favourably located for transport. BCB also held a network access permit for freight transport in Switzerland, where it was responsible for the Swiss partner Transalpin Eisenbahn AG of Captrain Deutschland GmbH. On 19 August 2015, BCB was merged retroactively to 1 January 2015 with TWE Bahnbetriebs GmbH (TWEBB) to form Captrain Deutschland CargoWest GmbH. The Neu-Ulm location was retained. BCB had nine locomotives registered to it: two G 1000 BB diesel locomotives, one Alstom Prima EL3U/4 electric locomotive, and six Siemens ES64F4 locomotives. TWEBB, founded in 2003 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Teutoburger Wald-Eisenbahn AG, focused on nationwide rail freight for the steel industry and later paper logistics. After the merger, the combined company Captrain Deutschland CargoWest GmbH operated from Gütersloh and Ulm, using 28 locomotives (15 electric and 13 diesel) and more than 1,000 freight wagons in 2025, serving Germany and cross-border traffic to France, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.
