Overview
Bavaria is a Colombian brewing company whose founding transaction dates to 1889 and whose formal establishment as Bavaria Kopp's Deutsche Bierbrauerei occurred in 1890. It is part of AB InBev and operates seven breweries, two maltings, a label factory and more than 50 logistics complexes across Colombia.
History
In 1876, German brothers Leo Siegfried and Emil Kopp Koppel arrived in Santander, Colombia. Three years later they associated with brothers Santiago and Carlos Arturo Castello and formed the company Kopp y Castello in Bogotá, which in 1889 acquired a lot for the construction of a beer factory; this transaction is considered the founding event of Bavaria. In 1890 Kopp y Castello was dissolved and Bavaria Kopp's Deutsche Bierbrauerei was born, with the San Diego plant inaugurated in central Bogotá. The imperial eagle was registered as the factory's image, the Fenicia glass factory was founded for making containers, and brands including Pilsener, Bock Negra, Lager Oscura, Doppel Stout, Tigre, Higiénica and Tres Emperadores were created. In 1930, with the union of Handel and Cervecería Continental de Medellín, the Consorcio de Cervecerías Bavaria was created, incorporating the Colombiana de Cervezas de Manizales and its Póker brand, as well as other brewing plants in Santa Marta, Cali, Pereira and Honda. Founder Leo S. Kopp died. On 8 October 1934, Costeña beer was launched in Barranquilla. In 1946, Malterías de Colombia S. A. was created, operating branches in Popayán, Pamplona, Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Ipiales and Manizales. On 31 January 1973, a new plant complex was inaugurated in Bogotá.
