Overview
BAUMANN Federn AG, trading internationally as BAUMANN Springs Ltd., is a Swiss family-owned industrial group headquartered in Ermenswil in the canton of St. Gallen. Founded in 1886 by the brothers Heinrich and Caspar Baumann, the company began by making weaving accessories and wooden articles before shifting around 1900 to the manufacture of steel springs. Over more than 140 years it has grown into one of the world's leading manufacturers of technical springs, stampings and bent parts, and it remains in the hands of the founding family, now in its fifth generation. The group develops, produces and sells customer-specific springs, stampings and contact elements. Its product range includes compression springs, spiral springs, torsion springs and wave springs, together with stamped and stamped-bent components. These are supplied to large industrial customers in the automotive, medical technology, medium- and high-voltage, low-voltage and electronics sectors, as well as to machine and engine builders. BAUMANN positions itself as a specialist and technological spearhead in its field, combining in-house engineering, research and development and machine construction to deliver precise, durable products. BAUMANN operates nine production sites around the globe and has manufacturing locations in eight countries on three continents. The group employs around 1,500 people, roughly a quarter of them in Switzerland, and reports turnover of about 240 million Swiss francs. It manufactures more than 4.8 billion springs, stampings and bendings annually — around 152 per second. Its international footprint includes subsidiaries and plants in Italy, Germany, Singapore, the United States, the Czech Republic, India and, most recently, China. The company is organized into two divisions: Automotive and Industrial, and Medical. The Medical division addresses the specific needs of the medical and pharmaceutical industry, including applications such as pens and autoinjectors, metering systems and connectivity components. The Automotive and Industrial division serves demanding technical applications such as power lift gates. BAUMANN is led by Group CEO and Chairman of the Board Thomas H. Rüegg, with Stefan Schmid as Group CFO and Hansjürg Hartmann heading the Medical division. BAUMANN describes its vision as saving and enriching lives through solutions that elevate health, comfort, safety and efficiency, and its mission as keeping the world in motion by storing, absorbing, releasing and transmitting energy. Its stated strategy is to evolve from a local generalist into a global specialist. The company emphasizes Swiss precision, quality and long product life, and has engaged with sustainability and ESG transparency initiatives in recent years.
History
BAUMANN Federn AG was founded in 1886 by the brothers Kaspar and Heinrich Baumann. The company initially manufactured weaving accessories and wooden articles, serving the nearby textile machinery industry. Around 1900, production shifted to steel springs, with main customers being nearby textile machine manufacturers, including the Maschinenfabrik Rüti, and later automobile manufacturers in Italy. In 1933, the collective partnership was converted into a joint-stock company (Aktiengesellschaft). At the same time, Henri Rüegg, a half-brother of the Baumann founders, took over the management of the company. After Rüegg's death, his sons Hans and Theodor Rüegg took over the business in 1960. Following the establishment of a subsidiary in Italy in 1946, the company expanded to Germany in 1964 (as Baumann GmbH based in Lichtenstein-Unterhausen) and to Singapore and the United States in 1979. From 1984 to 2010, the group was led by Hans R. Rüegg, who continued international expansion by founding further subsidiaries. At the beginning of 2011, Thomas H. Rüegg, son of Hans R. Rüegg, took over the leadership of the BAUMANN Group, making it a fifth-generation family business. In 2006, the BAUMANN Group broke ground for a new production plant in Karviná, Czech Republic, with official production beginning in 2007. A sales office was opened in India in 2012. In 2024, BAUMANN signed a contract for a new production site in Changshu, China, marking a significant milestone in its strategic expansion. Today, BAUMANN has been a symbol of Swiss precision and quality for 140 years. The group operates nine production sites around the globe, with manufacturing locations in eight countries on three continents, and employs around 1,500 people. It reports turnover of about 240 million Swiss francs and manufactures more than 4.8 billion springs, stampings and bendings annually. The company remains a family-run business, now in the hands of the fifth generation, and serves customers in the automotive, medical and industrial sectors.
