Overview

Batzer & Co. is a Danish independent publishing house based in Roskilde. It was founded in 1978 by the Norwegian-born bookseller and publisher Arild Batzer under the name Roskilde Bogcafé, originally operating as a bookshop, antiquarian book dealer and music store in Gråbrødrestræde in Roskilde. The enterprise was supported by a friends' association, "Bogcaféens Venner", which contributed capital and organised events. In its early years the shop described itself as an "environmental bookshop" because of the environmental focus in its title selection, and it also hosted poetry readings at the Roskilde Festival. In 1988 the business moved to larger premises at Ringstedgade 28 in the same city, with the aim of establishing an alternative cultural centre. The first book was published in 1986 — "Fluer og støv: glimt fra en rejse i Marokko" by Klaus Lynggaard — along with the first cassette tape, "Live at Roskilde Festival 1982" by T.S. Høeg. Over time publishing became the dominant activity, and the publishing house was formally established in 1997. The bookshop side of the business ceased in 2000. The publisher focuses especially on translations of Norwegian and Icelandic literature, and its list includes works by authors such as Olga Tokarczuk, Peter Handke, Imre Kertész, Per Petterson, Kjell Westö and Jón Kalman Stefánsson. Arild Batzer is the publisher and Stine Mulbjerg is the editor. The company remains a small, privately held Danish literary publisher, selling through its own website and the book trade.

History

Batzer & Co. traces its origins to 1978, when the Norwegian-born Arild Batzer founded Roskilde Bogcafé in Gråbrødrestræde in Roskilde, Denmark. The venture was established with the help of a support association called "Bogcaféens Venner" (Friends of the Book Café), which injected money into the enterprise and organised events at the book café. At that time the business combined a bookshop, an antiquarian book dealer and a music store. Roskilde Bogcafé called itself an "environmental bookshop" ("Miljøboghandel") because of the environmental focus in its selection of titles, and it also held events with poetry readings at the Roskilde Festival in the early years. In 1986 Roskilde Bogcafé published its first book, "Fluer og støv: glimt fra en rejse i Marokko" by Klaus Lynggaard, and its first cassette tape, "Live at Roskilde Festival 1982" by T.S. Høeg. In 1988 the company moved to larger premises at Ringstedgade 28 in the same city; the purpose of the move was to establish an alternative cultural centre. Over time it was the publishing side of the business that came to dominate. The publishing house was formally established in 1997, and in 2000 the bookshop part of the business ceased. The publisher has focused especially on translations of Norwegian and Icelandic literature. Its list includes works by authors such as Olga Tokarczuk, Peter Handke, Imre Kertész, Per Petterson, Kjell Westö and Jón Kalman Stefánsson. Arild Batzer is the publisher and Stine Mulbjerg is the editor. The company continues to operate as a small independent Danish literary publisher, with its own website offering titles for sale.
