Overview

Batteriretur® is a Norwegian battery take-back and recycling organisation, approved as a return company (returselskap) for all categories of batteries. It was founded in late autumn 1993 to meet the requirements of Norwegian waste regulations for discarded batteries, and it has fulfilled that mission continuously since. The brand Batteriretur® covers two companies organised under the same trademark, and its stated purpose is to collect and recycle all types of batteries across Norway — from Lindesnes in the south to Kinnarodden, the northernmost point of the mainland. The organisation operates a nationwide network of reception and collection points. This network was originally built for lead-acid (starting) batteries and was later extended to portable and household batteries after the EU's 2006 revision of the Battery Directive brought all battery categories into scope. Batteriretur reports that annual lead battery volumes grew from about 9,000 tonnes to 14,000–17,000 tonnes over roughly three decades, while portable battery volumes rose from just over 100 tonnes to nearly 1,000 tonnes using the same network. Batteriretur's activities span several battery categories. For household batteries (alkaline, lithium, Li-ion and NiMH), it informs consumers and businesses about return options at dealers, municipal waste sites and hazardous waste facilities. For starting and industrial batteries, and for high-energy batteries from electric vehicles and the marine sector, it works with specialised dismantling and handling operations. In 2014 it established Batteriretur EV AS to handle batteries from electric vehicles and the marine sector. High-energy battery handling is carried out together with Sortbat Belgium and Sortbat Norway AS, whose Fredrikstad, Sandefjord and Tienen (Belgium) departments are described as world-leading in the safe transport and dismantling of high-energy batteries. Batteriretur positions itself as a knowledge partner as well as a collection scheme. It advises car workshops, importers, authorities and fire services on battery handling, and it has developed an AI assistant, BattBot, to answer questions about the EU's new battery regulation. Its headquarters are at Kortbølgen 15b in Gamle Fredrikstad, Norway. The organisation also participates in Returfellesskapet, which handles the return of packaging and EE products.

History

Batteriretur® was founded in late autumn 1993 as an approved return company (returselskap) for discarded batteries, structured to meet the requirements of Norwegian waste regulations. Since then, according to its own account, it has fulfilled that mission year after year. The organisation's early work centred on lead-acid batteries, which are used as starting batteries in vehicles and in industrial applications. Over roughly three decades, annual lead battery volumes handled through its network grew from about 9,000 tonnes to 14,000–17,000 tonnes. In 2006, the EU extended the Battery Directive to cover all categories of batteries. Batteriretur describes the decision to use the same fine-meshed network of reception and collection points for all battery categories as a logical path. With that network, portable battery volumes grew from just over 100 tonnes to nearly 1,000 tonnes. As Norway electrified, Batteriretur moved into high-energy batteries. In 2014 it established Batteriretur EV AS to handle batteries from electric vehicles and the marine sector. High-energy battery handling is carried out in cooperation with Sortbat Belgium and Sortbat Norway AS; their departments in Fredrikstad, Sandefjord and Tienen (Belgium) are described as world-leading in the safe transport and dismantling of high-energy batteries. This work has been developed in collaboration with the automotive industry, and Batteriretur's expertise allows it to act as an adviser to car workshops, importers, authorities and fire services. Batteriretur states that it accepts all batteries it receives, and that promising cooperation projects over the years have placed it in an internationally leading position. Its nationwide network of reception and collection points, combined with what it describes as enthusiasm, is presented as the basis for its results. The organisation also participates in Returfellesskapet, which handles the return of packaging and EE products. In recent years it has added informational tools, including a blog, videos and the BattBot AI assistant for questions about the EU's new battery regulation.
