Overview

The Basler Interessengemeinschaft Dialekt (IG Dialäggt) is a Basel-based association founded on 22 April 2008 by Beat Trachsler and others. Its purpose is to promote and defend the local Alemannic dialect (Baseldeutsch) as a living language of everyday life, culture and education. The association became particularly active in 2011, when a political project in Basel proposed removing the dialect from everyday school life and even from kindergarten. Since then, the IG has focused on ensuring that children are allowed to speak the dialect naturally in schools where this is possible. The association organizes a wide range of events around dialect culture, including dialect music, slam poetry, lectures by dialectologists and other activities. It supports the Theater Baseldytsche Bihni in the Lohnhof in Basel and maintains contact with other dialect organizations such as the Basler Hebelstiftig, the Verein Schweizerdeutsch (now appearing as mundartforum.ch), the Muettersproch-Gsellschaft and the Alsatian association E Friehjohr fer unseri Sproch. The IG Dialäggt emphasizes that work for the dialect is valuable for preserving the cultural identity of a region, and that this is a general cultural and social project rather than a matter of party politics. It therefore defines itself as a non-partisan organization. Its goals are simultaneously cultural and political: it argues that the living dialect should not be played off against the cultivation of a standard language, as school authorities in some cantons have attempted. It points out that children have no problem speaking the local dialect or an official standard language depending on the situation, and learning both side by side. This also applies to children from families who have immigrated to Switzerland from abroad, as careful surveys have shown. The association has developed a new teaching game called "Sproochschatz" for practicing the dialect in kindergarten. The Basler IG Dialäggt is led by co-presidents Vreni Leibundgut, Liselotte Reber-Liebrich and Felix Rudolf von Rohr, and maintains its own website at igdialekt.ch.

History

The Basler Interessengemeinschaft Dialekt (officially in High German; in Basel German: Baasler Inträssegmainschaft Dialäggt) is an association in Basel dedicated to the local dialect. It was founded on 22 April 2008 by Beat Trachsler and others. The association became active in 2011, when a political project was presented in Basel that aimed to make the dialect disappear from everyday school life and specifically even from kindergarten. Since then, the association has particularly focused on ensuring that children are allowed to speak the dialect quite simply in the schoolhouses where possible. The society organizes all kinds of events around dialect culture, with dialect music, slam poetry, lectures by dialectologists and more. It supports the Theater Baseldytsche Bihni in the Lohnhof in Basel. It maintains contact with other dialect organizations such as the Basler Hebelstiftig, the Verein Schweizerdeutsch (which now appears as mundartforum.ch), the Muettersproch-Gsellschaft and the Alsatian association E Friehjohr fer unseri Sproch. The IG Dialäggt reminds people that work for the dialect is good for preserving the cultural independence of a region, and that as a general cultural and social project it is not a question of party politics but a matter that concerns everyone. Therefore the IG defines itself as a non-partisan organization. What the Basel IG wants is at the same time a cultural and a political concern: one should stop playing the living dialect off against the cultivation of a standard language, as the school authorities have been trying to do for some time in some cantons. It has been shown that children have no problem at all speaking the local dialect or an official standard language depending on the situation, and learning both side by side properly. And this also applies to children from families who have immigrated to Switzerland from abroad, as is known from careful surveys. The society has had the new teaching game "Sproochschatz" developed, with which the dialect can be practiced in kindergarten. The Basler IG Dialäggt, led by co-presidents Vreni Leibundgut, Liselotte Reber-Liebrich and Felix Rudolf von Rohr, has its own website: igdialekt.ch.
