Overview

Bashavtotrans (АО «Башавтотранс») is a motor-transport company whose operations cover the whole Republic of Bashkortostan in Russia. It is described as one of the largest road-transport enterprises in the country and the largest regional passenger carrier in the republic. Its history is traced back to 1921, when the Central Transport Administration of Ufa Governorate operated a small fleet of trucks and cars; the enterprise marked its 100th anniversary in 2021. Regular passenger service in Ufa began in 1924, and intercity bus routes such as Ufa–Sterlitamak and Ufa–Birsk followed in 1929. The company operates urban, suburban, intercity and interregional bus routes. According to its official website, more than 1,500 buses are on the road, carrying more than 100 million passengers annually, with about 5,800 employees. Its structure includes 16 transport branches plus a base unit for warranty and major repairs, and a bus-station division (Объединение автостанций) with 19 bus stations, 1 bus terminal and 34 ticket points. The company reports more than 9,000 daily trips and over 400,000 passengers carried per day across all route types. Passenger volumes grew from 79 million in 2018, before the republic's transport reform, to 104 million in 2021 and 127 million in 2024. Bashavtotrans has been reorganised several times. In May 1993 the association became the Bashkir joint-stock company of public motor transport «Bashavtotrans». By a presidential decree of the Republic of Bashkortostan in September 1997 it was transformed into the State Unitary Enterprise «Bashavtotrans» of the Republic of Bashkortostan. On 18 April 2025 the state unitary enterprise was reorganised into Joint-Stock Company «Bashavtotrans», with the Republic of Bashkortostan, represented by the Ministry of Land and Property Relations, as its sole shareholder. The core business remained unchanged. The fleet has been modernised over the years with Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibuses, Mercedes-Benz Tourismo coaches and various NefAZ buses, including models produced in cooperation with the Dutch-Belgian firm VDL. The company also runs the Bashkir Republican Training and Course Combine (BRUKK) driving school, preparing drivers of all categories, and sells tickets for intercity routes through its website.

History

The history of Bashavtotrans is closely tied to the development of Bashkortostan over more than a century. The first mention of an automobile on the streets of Ufa dates to 1907. In 1921 the Central Transport Administration of Ufa Governorate, operating 14 trucks and 12 passenger cars, carried 718 passengers and 88,711 poods of cargo, while horse-drawn transport still dominated. In 1923 the Bashkir Central Executive Committee adopted a decision «On strengthening motor transport of the Bashkir Republic», and in 1924 regular passenger service opened in Ufa using three trucks, marking the beginning of public motor transport. The company itself traces its founding to 1921 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021. In 1929 intercity passenger buses began running on the Ufa–Sterlitamak and Ufa–Birsk routes; Bashkiria then had 42 buses for local and intercity transport. The growth of motor transport led to the creation of motor enterprises: the Sterlitamak motor-transport enterprise in 1925, Ufa Passenger Motor Enterprise No. 3 in 1928 with 12 trucks, semi-trucks and cars plus one motorcycle, and the Meleuz motor-transport enterprise in 1933. The construction of domestic automobile plants in Moscow and Gorky expanded motor transport in Bashkortostan and helped reorganise horse-drawn artels into motor-transport enterprises. On the eve of the Great Patriotic War, the Bashkir Motor Transport Administration had seven motor depots with more than 500 vehicles, including 100 buses with a total capacity of 960 passengers. In 1955 the Bashkir Motor Transport Trust was created to unite and develop motor-transport enterprises, and in 1956 the Ishimbay motor-transport enterprise was formed. In the 1960s and 1970s the system received 5,300 new trucks, 1,200 buses and 1,000 passenger cars. Between 1946 and 1996, 42 motor-transport enterprises were created within the Bashavtotrans system (9 passenger, 22 mixed and 11 freight), located in various cities and district centres of the republic. In August 1967 the association was transformed into the Bashkir Transport Administration; in August 1980 into the Bashkir Territorial Production Association of Motor Transport «Glavbashavtotrans» within the Republican Association «Uralavtotrans»; and in 1983 into the Bashkir Territorial Association of Motor Transport «Bashavtotrans». Further name changes occurred in 1984 and 1988. In May 1993 the association was transformed into the Bashkir Joint-Stock Company of Public Motor Transport «Bashavtotrans», allowing it to operate as a single production and economic complex, preserve its enterprises and staff, and ensure stable passenger and freight transport. By Decree of the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan No. 622 of 29 September 1997, the state joint-stock company «Bashavtotrans» was transformed into the State Unitary Enterprise of Public Motor Transport «Bashavtotrans» of the Republic of Bashkortostan. In recent years the company has received a new development impulse while remaining a key element of Bashkortostan's unified transport system. It served 104 million passengers in 2021 (compared with 79 million in 2018, before the republic's transport reform) and 127 million in 2024. On 18 April 2025 the State Unitary Enterprise «Bashavtotrans» of the Republic of Bashkortostan was reorganised into Joint-Stock Company «Bashavtotrans», with the Republic of Bashkortostan, represented by the Ministry of Land and Property Relations, as its sole shareholder. The main activity remained unchanged, ensuring continuity of all processes and obligations of the carrier.
