Overview

Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft (Basalt AG) is a German building materials company headquartered in Linz am Rhein. Founded in 1888, it is one of Germany's leading producers of natural stone products and asphalt. The company operates around 150 subsidiaries and participations, with quarries and asphalt mixing plants across Germany and several other European countries. It is wholly owned by the Wilh. Werhahn KG group. Basalt AG's business covers the entire cycle from raw material extraction to recycling and disposal, serving infrastructure projects such as airports, highways, and racetracks.

History

Basalt-Actien-Gesellschaft was founded on 2 June 1888 in Cologne by three German quarry owners and eight Dutch merchants, led by Cologne quarry owner Wilhelm Zervas. The company had a branch in Rotterdam called "Basalt-Maatschappij" and held the majority of shares in the Bröltalbahn in Beuel. The Werhahn family was involved from the beginning and had a seat on the supervisory board from March 1896. In 1892, the company's headquarters moved to Linz am Rhein. Between 1920 and 1921, a representative administrative building was constructed on Linzhausenstraße. The period up to 1930 was marked by numerous acquisitions and participations, including a merger with Bergisch-Märkische Stein-Industrie AG and co-founding of Basalt-Union (1927), Société des Basaltes Français (1928), and Strabag (1923). World War II caused a deep break: most production sites were destroyed, and the Sächsische Granit AG and Vacha plant were expropriated. In the 1950s, the company used the economic upswing to reorganize. In 1967, a profit-sharing agreement was concluded with Strabag and the majority of Dolerit-Basalt AG was acquired. In April 1978, Bankhaus Sal. Oppenheim sold its shares, and Wilh. Werhahn KG became the sole owner. After German reunification, subsidiaries such as Lausitzer Naturstein- und Baustoffwerke (LNB) were founded. In 1996, Deutag GmbH & Co. KG including Erste Bayerische Basaltstein-AG was acquired, and in 2003, quarries of the insolvent Philipp Holzmann AG were taken over. Today, Basalt AG is one of the leading building materials producers in Germany with around 150 participations.
