Overview

Barmherzige Brüder Saffig is a non-profit social and healthcare institution based in Saffig, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It operates under the sponsorship of Barmherzige Brüder Trier gGmbH (BBT-Gruppe) and traces its origins to the Congregation of the Merciful Brothers of Maria-Hilf, founded by Peter Friedhofen in 1850. The Saffig branch itself was established in 1869 as the "Heil- und Pflegeanstalt der Barmherzigen Brüder für Gehirn- und Nervenleidende männlichen Geschlechts Maria Rosenthal zu Saffig." Over more than 150 years it has evolved from a residential care institution into a modern provider of psychiatric, geriatric, disability and community-based services. Today the organization supports and cares for more than 1,200 clients, patients, employees and residents across various locations in the Mayen-Koblenz and Ahrweiler districts and the city of Koblenz. It employs around 700 staff in over 40 different professions, plus about 30 trainees, volunteers and interns, making it one of the largest social-caritative employers in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. Its services are organized into several divisions: Gesundheitsdienste (health services), including a specialist clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy with 65 beds on four open wards, a day clinic with 15 places, a psychiatric outpatient clinic (PIA), physical therapy and a neurological practice (MVZ KKM); Seniorendienste (senior services) with the Maria vom Siege senior center in Plaidt and St. Josef in Münstermaifeld, plus the Brüder Mobil outpatient nursing service; Teilhabedienste (participation services) offering community psychiatric support, residential homes such as Wohnbereich Teichhöhe, Josef-Otten-Zentrum and Peter-Friedhofen-Haus, gerontopsychiatric and remedial residential services; and Teilhabe am Arbeitsleben (participation in working life) with the St. Josef workshops in Plaidt, vocational integration services in Andernach, the inclusion enterprise Gästehaus im Schlosspark and the PIKSL Labor Andernach for digital participation. The institution is certified and embedded in the quality management system of its parent organization. It maintains a central information and advisory office (ZIB) for inquiries and a job portal for recruitment. As part of the BBT-Gruppe, it continues the charitable mission initiated by Peter Friedhofen more than 160 years ago, focusing on the care of old, sick, disabled and disadvantaged people in society.

History

The history of Barmherzige Brüder Saffig begins with the Congregation of the Merciful Brothers of Maria-Hilf, founded on 21 June 1850 by Peter Friedhofen. The Saffig branch was established in 1869 under the name "Heil- und Pflegeanstalt der Barmherzigen Brüder für Gehirn- und Nervenleidende männlichen Geschlechts Maria Rosenthal zu Saffig." By that time, Peter Friedhofen had already been dead for nine years. In the following years, a series of new buildings led to a steady increase in patient admissions: 18 in 1880, 68 in 1890 and 278 in 1900. At the end of July 1914, the institution suffered its first major setback. With the outbreak of World War I, further construction had to be halted. Because nearly 40 percent of all brothers were called up for military service, ten smaller branches had to be closed. Between two serious fires in 1915 and 1926, the institution reached its highest occupancy in 1920 with 689 patients. After World War II, the institution continued to evolve. In 1979, the clinical department was included in the state hospital plan, bringing a completely new care mandate. In 1988, another milestone was reached: the "work therapy" that had been opened years earlier as part of life in the home was recognized as a workshop for disabled people and increasingly opened up to external employees. Until then, one could clearly speak of the "history" of Barmherzige Brüder Saffig in the singular. That changed in 1999 with the takeover of the Plaidt retirement home Maria vom Siege, which brought with it almost a hundred years of its own history. Over the decades, it had served several religious orders as a convent, was a sewing school and a kindergarten. Since then, the plural "histories" is more appropriate. The institution expanded within Saffig and then beyond its borders into surrounding towns. Today, clients are cared for in almost the entire Mayen-Koblenz district. The original "custodial care" in a single building has transformed through "living" in various but still fairly central houses into decentralized care, support and assistance. In the 21st century, Barmherzige Brüder Saffig has continued to modernize and expand its services. It now operates a specialist clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy with 65 beds on four open wards, a day clinic with 15 places, a psychiatric outpatient clinic, senior centers, workshops for disabled people, vocational integration services, an inclusion enterprise and a digital participation lab. The organization is certified and embedded in the quality management system of its parent, Barmherzige Brüder Trier gGmbH (BBT-Gruppe). It employs around 700 staff in over 40 professions and supports more than 1,200 clients, patients, employees and residents, making it one of the largest social-caritative institutions in northern Rhineland-Palatinate.
