Overview
Barmherzige Brüder Kritzendorf is a retirement and nursing home in Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria, run by the Catholic religious order Barmherzige Brüder (Brothers of Mercy). Its history reaches back to 1727, when the Florianihof was built, probably to plans by Jakob Prandtauer. In 1834 the Florianihof was dedicated to the Barmherzige Brüder, and from 1834 to 1910 it was leased for agricultural use. From 1910 the house received convalescents from the Vienna hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder, and during 1914–1918 it cared for war wounded after their discharge from hospital. In 1919 a separate convent was established in Kritzendorf, and the house continued as a convalescent home. The 20th century brought repeated expansion and rebuilding. The outbreak of war in 1938 interrupted a positive economic development; the house was run as an old people's home, soldiers and prisoners of war were quartered there, and it was used as the "Luftschutzrettungsstelle Kritzendorf". In 1954 a second storey was added, providing 39 beds. Between 1978 and 1981 a new building was erected with 141 rooms and 168 beds, including a chapel, buffet, festival and dining halls, kitchen and large laundry. A further extension with 110 beds, mainly nursing stations, followed between 1986 and 1988, together with physiotherapy and occupational facilities on the ground floor. The Florianihof was renovated in 1989–1991 and used for administration and staff housing. In 1999 the convent of the Barmherzige Brüder in Kritzendorf celebrated 80 years, and the main entrance was redesigned in 1999–2000. In 2005 the residential section on the second floor was restructured into single nursing apartments, and in 2006 the festival hall was redesigned and extended with a winter garden. The facade of the Josefshaus was renovated in 2007, and the café terrace was enlarged in 2011. In 2015 a Mercedes flatbed truck was acquired, and in 2016 the facility moved to Martinstraße 28–30, into the former Geriatriezentrum Klosterneuburg. In 2017 the nursing home in Kritzendorf was demolished. Today the facility presents itself under the motto "Pflegekompetenz und Verlässlichkeit" (nursing competence and reliability). Its website offers information on how to obtain a nursing place, on nursing and care quality, and on services and activities. It also hosts community events such as a goose dinner in the café, a Day of Bread, a multicultural festival during the Mission Week of Hospitality, and a fashion tour with the company Lücker for the 50+ generation. The house is part of the Austrian province of the Barmherzige Brüder, a Catholic order dedicated to care for the sick and elderly.
