Overview

Barlow Tyrie is an award-winning British outdoor furniture brand that has been producing furniture since 1920. It describes itself as the oldest British teakwood outdoor furniture manufacturer and the oldest remaining manufacturer of this traditional English product. The company began in London and has extended its range to include furniture made from marine grade stainless steel and powder-coated aluminium.

History

Barlow Tyrie started production in 1920 and is described as the oldest British teakwood outdoor furniture manufacturer. The company began in London, initially in Walthamstow and shortly afterwards moving to a small horse stable in Leytonstone. In 1919, following service in the First World War, Victor Tyrie and Frederick Barlow were employed by The Castles Shipbreaking Company on a government subsidized training scheme making outdoor furniture from teak sourced from the breaking of old timber ships. When that employment ceased after one year, in 1920 Victor and Frederick together with a few others started their own business. In the early years, outdoor furniture was made almost entirely by hand. In recent years the company has extended its range, adding furniture made from marine grade stainless steel and powder-coated aluminium.
