Overview

Baresel is a German construction brand with roots going back to 1876, when Carl Baresel founded a building firm in Frankfurt am Main. The business moved its headquarters to Stuttgart in 1903 and was reorganised in the early 1920s as the Gesellschaft für Tiefbauten AG Stuttgart, renamed C. Baresel AG in January 1922. Over the following decades it grew into a significant German contractor, active in civil engineering and building construction, and by the late 1990s it employed around 1,500 people with subsidiaries and participations in Germany and abroad. Ownership changed in September 1999, when the Osnabrück-based competitor Köster Bau AG & Co. acquired 74.9 percent of C. Baresel AG from the Hofkammer des Hauses Württemberg. From 2005 the company operated as a wholly owned subsidiary under the name Baresel GmbH, and the old stock corporation was removed from the commercial register in January 2006. At that stage Baresel GmbH had roughly 400 employees and branches in Stuttgart, Grasbrunn near Munich, Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main, Neu-Ulm and Mannheim, all within the Köster group of companies. On 1 January 2019 the company was renamed Baresel Tunnelbau GmbH, reflecting a focus on tunnelling. Today it describes itself as offering services across the entire project execution chain in tunnel construction, while remaining part of the Köster Group. Its registered office is in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Baden-Württemberg. The brand is therefore best understood as a specialist German engineering and construction contractor rather than a consumer-facing product brand.

History

The Baresel construction business was founded in 1876 by Carl Baresel in Frankfurt am Main. In 1903 the firm moved its main office to Stuttgart. On 21 December 1921 the Gesellschaft für Tiefbauten AG Stuttgart was established and entered in the commercial register on 31 December 1921; only days later, on 14 January 1922, it was renamed C. Baresel AG. After the Second World War the stock corporation grew into a major construction company. Gerhard Todenhöfer served on the board through the post-war years until the 1970s. He was followed by the politician Lothar Späth, who was active on the board from 1975 to 1977 and later in the supervisory board of C. Baresel AG. Hermann Ackermann, chairman of the board, received the Große Bundesverdienstkreuz in 1978. By the late 1990s Baresel was an interregionally active company with about 1,500 employees and several subsidiaries and participations in Germany and abroad. After 1990 Baresel acquired the Saxon construction firm Hoch- und Tiefbau Pirna, which was later absorbed into the Dresden branch based in Heidenau. Around 1990 the main shareholders were the Baresel-Bofinger families with about 41 percent, the Steidle-Sailer families with about 24 percent, and the Hofkammer des Hauses Württemberg with about 15 percent. In 1993 the Hofkammer secured a majority stake of 51 percent. In September 1999 the competitor Köster Bau AG & Co. of Osnabrück acquired a 74.9 percent stake in C. Baresel AG; the seller was the Hofkammer des Hauses Württemberg. As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Köster Group, the construction company has operated as Baresel GmbH since 2005. The deletion of Baresel AG from the commercial register followed on 6 January 2006. Baresel GmbH, with around 400 employees, maintained branches in Stuttgart, Grasbrunn near Munich, Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main, Neu-Ulm and Mannheim, and belonged to the group of companies of Köster GmbH in Osnabrück. Until 2000 the former C. Baresel AG also included the subsidiary Baresel GmbH & Co KG Kies- und Steinwerke, based in Ehningen. Besides the stone works in Ehningen, the transshipment point in Rottenburg am Neckar and the gravel works in Laiz, part of Sigmaringen, it also operated the Kieswerk Nord-Moräne GmbH & Co. KG in Bittelschieß, part of Krauchenwies, as well as various participations in the gravel and ready-mixed concrete sector in the Dresden and Lake Constance regions. On 1 January 2019 Baresel GmbH was renamed Baresel Tunnelbau GmbH. The company now offers services for the entire project execution process in tunnel construction. Its registered office is in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, and it remains part of the Köster Group.
