Overview

Bar Marketing and Distribution Holdings Ltd, commonly known as the Bar Group (קבוצת בר), is an Israeli private company group providing logistics, shipping and last-mile distribution services across the country. Founded in 1990 by Ido Bergman and Boaz Dekel, the group grew out of newspaper distribution and expanded into a broad range of delivery and logistics activities. According to its official website, the group is the largest private company in Israel in its field of activity, performing approximately one million deliveries per day through 100 branches from Dan to Eilat, thousands of couriers, an operations center, a service department and advanced technology. The group operates two main distribution channels: B2C distribution to private customers and B2B distribution to businesses and stores. For private customers, Bar Group performs about one million deliveries per day using various methods including personal delivery, door-to-door delivery, mailbox delivery, store pickup and locker pickup. For businesses, the group reaches more than 10,000 stores, businesses and distribution points six days a week from Dan to Eilat through hundreds of distribution lines. Its logistics infrastructure enables same-day and 24-hour e-commerce delivery to every home in Israel, from the collection stage to the delivery stage. The company was founded in 1990 by Ido Bergman and Boaz Dekel. Dekel had previously worked as distribution manager for the newspaper Hadashot. The company's first client was the newspaper Globes, whose subscriber copies the two founders initially distributed themselves. The company grew rapidly and, in addition to distributing newspapers and magazines to customers' homes, began distributing them for its clients to approximately 5,000 points of sale across the country. In 1994, Yedioth Communications, publisher of the daily newspapers Yedioth Ahronoth and Calcalist, acquired 25% of the company's shares. In December 2016, Yedioth Communications increased its stake to 50%. Bar Group has been central to the consolidation of newspaper distribution in Israel. In May 2013, the distribution company of the newspaper Maariv, Gal-Ma'iton, closed and Maariv began being distributed by Bar Distribution. In November 2014, Yedioth Communications closed its own distribution system for delivering newspapers to businesses and retail chains and transferred it to Bar Distribution. In April 2017, the Haaretz Group closed its distribution system and transferred it to Bar Distribution, and jointly with Bar Distribution established an equally owned company dealing with shipping products for commercial entities, Bar Home Delivery. In January 2018, it began distributing the newspaper Israel Hayom to subscribers as well. Beyond newspaper distribution, the group has expanded into e-commerce logistics, courier services, bulk mail, storage, inventory management, picking and supply to end customers, and unique logistics and distribution solutions in the field of sales promotion. Its subsidiary P.M.I Trade and Initiation, founded in 1997, produces, markets and distributes branded collectible and leisure products for children and teenagers, including Power Rangers collectibles, Walt Disney collection albums, the Supergoal Israeli football players album, and Harry Potter-related products. In 2002, Bar Group partnered with the courier company Aviv-Shigur and Be'eri Press to establish the company Messer, aimed at competing with Israel Post in the bulk mail market. From November 2004, the company operated the book and newspaper stores at Ben Gurion Airport under the name Bar Books & Press, but relinquished the concession in December 2007 due to lack of economic viability. The company also won a tender to establish newspaper sales points at Israel Railways main stations. Bar Group is a private company group. It adopts the Golan Heights brigade as part of a project of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers (Amit LaLochem).

History

Bar Group was founded in 1990 by Ido Bergman and Boaz Dekel. Bergman is the brother-in-law of businessman Nochi Dankner and also held shares in Dankner's Ganden Investments company, which went bankrupt. In 1994, Yedioth Communications, publisher of the daily newspapers Yedioth Ahronoth and Calcalist, acquired 25% of the company's shares. In 1997, the subsidiary P.M.I Trade and Initiation was founded, engaged in the production, marketing and distribution of branded collectible and leisure products for children and teenagers. The first product the company marketed was collectibles based on the popular television series Power Rangers. It later received a concession to distribute in Israel the collection albums of The Walt Disney Company, the Supergoal brand — an album of Israeli football players — and the concession to market and distribute products related to the Harry Potter film series. In April 2001, Yael Arad was appointed CEO of P.M.I. At the end of 2001, the company operated delivery services for the McDonald's Israel chain for about half a year. In 2002, it established, in partnership with the courier company Aviv-Shigur and Be'eri Press, the company Messer, with the aim of competing with Israel Post in the bulk mail market (mail sent in large quantities by banks, credit companies, communications companies, etc.). In November 2004, the company began operating under concession the book and newspaper stores at Ben Gurion Airport, under the name Bar Books & Press. About half a year later, the company was investigated in the Trojan Horse affair, on suspicion that it had ordered business espionage against the Steimatzky chain during the tender for the concession. The company also won a tender to establish newspaper sales points at Israel Railways main stations. In December 2007, it relinquished the concession to operate the book stores at Ben Gurion Airport due to lack of economic viability. In 2009, Boaz Dekel purchased full ownership of the subsidiary P.M.I, while simultaneously selling his holdings in Bar Distribution to Ido Bergman. In December 2016, Yedioth Communications increased its stake in the company to 50%. In May 2013, the distribution company of the newspaper Maariv, Gal-Ma'iton, closed and Maariv began being distributed by Bar Distribution. In November 2014, Yedioth Communications closed its distribution system for delivering newspapers to businesses and retail chains and transferred it to Bar Distribution. In April 2017, the Haaretz Group closed its distribution system and transferred it to Bar Distribution. In addition, it established jointly with Bar Distribution, in equal parts, a company dealing with shipping products for commercial entities — Bar Home Delivery. In January 2018, it began distributing the newspaper Israel Hayom to subscribers as well. The group provides the following services: delivery of products by personal delivery; distribution of newspapers and magazines to customers' homes nationwide; distribution of newspapers, magazines and consumer products to marketing chains and points of sale; distribution of bulk mail to customer homes for commercial clients; storage, inventory management, picking and supply to end customers; unique logistics and distribution solutions in the field of sales promotion; and shelf stocking and shelf control in retail chains. The company adopts the Golan Heights brigade as part of a project of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers (Amit LaLochem).
