Overview
BankServ was a legacy financial-technology and financial-services company headquartered in Enterprise, Nevada. Founded in 1996, it developed the infrastructure and software that banks and other businesses used to move money electronically, rather than operating primarily as a consumer-facing banking brand. Its activities included outsourced data processing and software for remote deposit capture, internet bill payment, mobile payments, wire transfers, credit-card transactions, and messaging through the international SWIFT financial network. The company served banks and other financial institutions in the United States and internationally. Before its combination with Fundtech, BankServ was reported to do business with more than 400 banks in over 50 countries. Its products were generally embedded in institutional workflows: banks could use BankServ technology to receive deposits remotely, process checks, transmit payment instructions, support electronic bill payment, and connect to international payment and messaging networks. This positioning placed BankServ in the business-to-business payments and banking-technology infrastructure segment rather than in retail banking. BankServ broadened its scope during the 2000s. From 2004 onward, it expanded into consumer remote deposit, electronic bill payment, and credit-card processing. In January 2004, it acquired London-based Symtec Solutions, adding international money-transfer and SWIFT financial-messaging capabilities. In May 2009, it acquired the assets of Commerciant, a Houston technology company focused on wireless credit-card processing. That transaction added a handheld terminal capable of processing card payments over mobile-phone networks, extending BankServ's reach into mobile and point-of-sale payments. In 2010, BankServ acquired NetDeposit from Zions Bancorporation. NetDeposit was one of BankServ's principal competitors in remote deposit, and the acquisition materially expanded the company's check-processing operations. It also brought branch-capture and mobile check-deposit software. BankServ stated that, following the transaction, its systems processed remote-deposit transactions for more than 100,000 business customers in the United States. Ownership changed in August 2011, when private-equity firm GTCR acquired a controlling interest in BankServ. GTCR subsequently pursued a combination with Fundtech, an Israeli payments-technology company. The merger was completed in November 2011, and the combined company operated under the Fundtech name. BankServ therefore ceased to exist as an independent operating brand, although its capabilities and customer relationships became part of the broader Fundtech platform. The subsequent corporate chain moved BankServ's technology further into the financial-software industry. In April 2015, D+H acquired Fundtech from GTCR. In June 2017, D+H announced that it would be acquired by Vista Equity Partners and combined with Misys. The resulting organization adopted the name Finastra. BankServ is consequently best understood as a historical financial-technology company whose products and operations were absorbed through successive acquisitions and combinations, rather than as an active standalone brand.
History
BankServ was established in 1996 in the United States as a financial-technology company serving banks and other businesses. Its core role was to provide electronic banking software and outsourced data-processing services that enabled institutions to move money, process checks, transmit payment instructions, and communicate through financial networks. The company operated primarily as an institutional technology provider rather than as a consumer-facing bank. During its growth period, BankServ developed a broad portfolio covering remote deposit capture, electronic bill payment, mobile payments, wire transfers, credit-card processing, and SWIFT messaging. Its customer base was international: the company was described as working with more than 400 banks in over 50 countries. It also received recognition in the Inc. growth-company rankings, including nominations associated with the Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 programs during the 2003–2010 period. A major expansion phase began in 2004. BankServ entered additional consumer-oriented payment and deposit categories and acquired Symtec Solutions, a London-based company specializing in international money transfer and SWIFT financial messaging. The acquisition added an international dimension to BankServ's existing electronic-banking activities and strengthened its ability to support cross-border financial communications. In May 2009, BankServ acquired the assets of Commerciant, a Houston-based technology company working on wireless credit-card processing. The transaction gave BankServ a handheld terminal capable of processing card transactions through mobile-phone networks. This complemented its institutional processing software with a more physical and mobile payment capability. BankServ expanded its remote-deposit business again in 2010 by acquiring NetDeposit from Zions Bancorporation. NetDeposit was a significant competitor in remote deposit. Through the transaction, BankServ nearly doubled the scale of its check-processing operations and added branch-capture and mobile check-deposit software. BankServ estimated that its resulting platform handled remote-deposit transactions for more than 100,000 business customers in the United States. The company's ownership and corporate identity changed substantially in 2011. In August, GTCR acquired a controlling interest in BankServ. The private-equity owner then announced plans to merge BankServ with Fundtech, an Israeli payments company. The combination was completed in November 2011, after which the unified business was known as Fundtech. BankServ consequently no longer operated as an independent company under its original identity. The Fundtech platform later became part of D+H when D+H acquired Fundtech in April 2015 from GTCR. In June 2017, D+H announced that Vista Equity Partners would acquire it and combine it with Misys. The combined business adopted the Finastra name and operated at a larger financial-software scale. These successive transactions ended BankServ's life as a standalone brand and transferred its technology and business activities into successor companies.
