Overview

Banco Finantia, S.A. is an independent Portuguese bank founded in 1987 and headquartered in Lisbon. It describes itself as an independent and specialised institution focused on two core pillars: Private Banking and Corporate & Investment Banking. Its private banking arm serves individuals and families with savings and investment goals, offering term deposits, investment funds, bonds and portfolio management, while its corporate and investment banking arm provides financing, financial advisory and access to capital markets through three specialised areas: corporate banking, financial advisory and capital markets. The bank traces its origins to 1987, when it began as a financial services company with Portuguese private investors; the public deed was executed on 31 July 1987. Early foreign investors included Dupont Denand (Paris) and Wallace Smith (London). In 1988 it associated with Goldman Sachs and became an investment company, and in 1989 it began managing Portugal's first treasury fund, Lloyds Curto Prazo. It obtained its banking licence in 1992. Over the following decades it built a cross-border profile, with private banking concentrated in the Iberian Peninsula and investment banking developed along the Iberia/Latin America corridor and in the Turkish, Russian and CIS markets, supported by offices in Lisbon, London, Madrid, New York, São Paulo and Miami. Banco Finantia is privately held. Its main shareholders have included Finantipar (a holding controlled by the bank's senior management), Natixis (France), VTB Capital PLC (United Kingdom) and WestLB (Germany). It is registered at the Lisbon Commercial Registry under the single legal person and registration number 501.897.020, with share capital of EUR 150,000,000. The bank has consistently reported positive results and maintains a policy of strong solvency ratios; in 2019 it reported profits of EUR 38.6 million and a Common Equity Tier ratio of 21%. It has received numerous national and international awards, including recognition from Euromoney, The Banker, Global Banking & Finance Review, International Banker and The European in categories such as Best Private Bank Portugal, Best Corporate Bank Portugal and Best Investment Bank Portugal. In November 2021 Banco Finantia concluded a cross-border merger with Banco Finantia Spain, S.A., which became Banco Finantia Sucursal en España, aimed at greater efficiency, resource sharing and meeting growing regulatory requirements. The bank also offers FinantiaNet, a digital banking platform associated with its private banking service, providing account access, transfers, product subscription and biometric identity validation via a mobile app. It is a member of the Terra Alliance and the Groupement Européen de Banques, and it engages in social responsibility initiatives in solidarity, financial education and cultural heritage.

History

Banco Finantia, S.A. began its activity in 1987 as a financial services company backed by Portuguese private investors, with its public deed executed on 31 July 1987. Its first foreign investors in Finantia – Gestão e Consultoria Financeira, S.A. were Dupont Denand (Paris) and Wallace Smith (London). In 1988 the firm associated with Goldman Sachs and transformed into an investment company. A year later it began managing Portugal's first treasury fund, Lloyds Curto Prazo. The banking licence followed in 1992, marking its transition into a full bank. With a presence in national and international markets, Banco Finantia operates in selected market segments: private banking and investment banking. The group's services also include asset management and capital market financing operations. Private banking activity is concentrated in the Iberian Peninsula, while investment banking is developed along the Iberia/Latin America corridor and in the Turkish, Russian and CIS markets, through offices in Lisbon, London, Madrid, New York, São Paulo and Miami. Also in 2016, Banco Finantia joined the Terra Alliance and the Groupement Européen de Banques, organisations focused on exchanging information on the financial and banking situation of the countries where their members operate and observing key market initiatives and trends. In 2019, Banco Finantia appeared in the Brand Reputation Value study by consultancy On Strategy, which evaluates the financial reputation of brands in Portugal; the bank was part of the Top 10 in the banking sector. In May 2019, at a general shareholders' meeting, the bank elected three new deputy directors for the 2019–2021 triennium: David Guerreiro, Ricardo Caldeira and Telma Oliveira, reinforcing executive management that had operated without an executive president since 2017.
