Overview

Banca di Credito Popolare (BCP) is an Italian cooperative bank. According to its own history page, it was established on 19 April 1888 by notarial act of Notary Vincenzo Bizzarro, homologated by the Civil and Correctional Court of Naples on 11 May 1888, when 28 people — including employees, merchants, elementary school teachers, coral artisans and small landowners — set up the Società Anonima Cooperativa di Credito Popolare. History

Banca di Credito Popolare was established on 19 April 1888 by notarial act of Notary Vincenzo Bizzarro, homologated by the Civil and Correctional Court of Naples with a resolution of 11 May 1888. At that time 28 people — including employees, merchants, elementary school teachers, coral artisans and small landowners — constituted and launched, in a two-room premises, the Società Anonima Cooperativa di Credito Popolare. Its original statute stated the purpose of forming capital from pooled small savings, facilitating credit for members, redeeming the less well-off from usury, and particularly benefiting workers, farmers, second-tier merchants and employees. By shareholder resolution of 11 April 1948, the company name was changed to "Banca di Credito Popolare, Società cooperativa a responsabilità limitata". By deed of 8 October 1968, drawn up by Notary Olimpio Marino, a merger took place with the "Banca Popolare Cooperativa del Matese" of Piedimonte d'Alife, and the company adopted the name "Banca di Credito Popolare, Società cooperativa per azioni a responsabilità limitata". From 1 May 2005, by resolution of the Extraordinary Shareholders' Meeting, Banca di Credito Popolare became a "Società Cooperativa per Azioni". The bank's mission page states that for over 135 years it has aimed at the growth and socio-economic enhancement of its regional territory, of which it says it is today the only autonomous banking institution with a widespread presence.
