It was founded on the initiative of Vilnius University professor Jonas Kazlauskas and is prepared by the staff of the university's Department of Baltic Studies. Articles are published in six languages: Lithuanian, Latvian, English, German, French, and Russian. The journal is indexed in eight databases, including Scopus, ERIH PLUS, DOAJ, EBSCO CEEAS, Cabell's International, MLA International Bibliography, BrillOnline Bibliography, and Inter Libros. Its editorial board includes scholars from Lithuania and abroad, and all published articles undergo double-blind peer review by two editorial board members and one external scholar. Baltistica contributes to Vilnius University's reputation as a global center for Baltic studies.

History

Baltistica was founded in 1965 on the initiative of Vilnius University professor Jonas Kazlauskas. From its inception, the journal was not part of any series of scholarly works of higher education institutions or academies. It was prepared by the staff of the Department of Baltic Studies at Vilnius University. Until 1973, the publication was prepared by the Department of Lithuanian Language at Vilnius University, and until 1992 it was published by the Minties and Mokslo publishing houses. Since 1992, it has been published by Vilnius University Press. In 2005, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the journal, a jubilee volume was published. This volume differed from previous publications in that the majority of it consisted of a bibliography of all forty volumes and six supplements, together with bibliographies of articles, information sources, and reviews, and a thematic index. In 2011, the journal's website was created, providing basic information about the publication, an archive of published issues, and an electronic publishing system that allows all publishing process actions, such as layout, review, and submission of publications, to be performed electronically. The website was built using the open-source Open Journal Systems software, adapted for the journal's needs by specialists from the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University: Marius Tverijonas, Vytautas Rinkevičius, Aida Jungaitytė, Sandra Gaigalaitė, and Ernesta Kazakėnaitė. The creation of the website www.baltistica.lt was funded by the Research Council of Lithuania. In 2015, the journal was accepted into the ERIH PLUS database. In 2019, evaluators of the prestigious academic database Scopus proposed including Baltistica in the database. Currently, the journal is indexed in a total of 8 databases: Scopus, ERIH Plus, DOAJ, EBSCO CEEAS, Cabell's International, MLA International Bibliography, BrillOnline Bibliography, and Inter Libros. Since the publication of the first issue, articles by scholars from various countries have been published in six languages: Lithuanian, Latvian, English, German, French, and Russian. Active cooperation with foreign Balticists that began at the journal's founding continues to this day. The publication of Baltistica contributes to the reputation of Vilnius University as a global center for Baltic studies.
