Overview
Bally's Corporation is a United States-based gaming and entertainment company headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island. Its principal activities include operating casinos, hotel-casinos, sports-betting services, online casino and bingo products, horse racing, golf, media partnerships, and sports content. The company operates primarily in the United States, with additional activities in the United Kingdom and Australia through its interactive and Star Entertainment Group interests. The business began in 2004 as BLB Investors, a joint venture formed by Starwood Capital Group, Kerzner International, and the Waterford Group. The venture was created to pursue Wembley plc, a British racetrack operator whose American assets included Lincoln Park in Rhode Island and several Colorado racing facilities. BLB acquired the American properties in 2005 and invested heavily in Lincoln Park, which was renamed Twin River in 2007. The global financial crisis placed the company under severe financial pressure, and BLB entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009. It emerged in 2010 under lender ownership and adopted the name Twin River Worldwide Holdings in 2011. Twin River subsequently pursued geographic diversification and a larger regional-casino portfolio. It acquired Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi in 2014, Newport Grand in Rhode Island in 2015, and completed a reverse merger with Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment in 2019. That transaction made the company publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. After Standard General and its principal Soo Kim became influential shareholders, the company embarked on an accelerated acquisition program. In 2020 it purchased several casinos from Affinity Gaming and Eldorado Resorts and acquired Bally's Atlantic City and the rights to the Bally's name from Caesars Entertainment. The 2020 brand transaction transformed the corporate identity. Twin River changed its name to Bally's Corporation and adopted the BALY ticker. The company intended to place the Bally's name across much of its property portfolio, using a historic casino brand to unify land-based gaming, online gambling, sports betting, and entertainment businesses. In 2021 it bought MontBleu, Jumer's Casino & Hotel, Tropicana Evansville, SportCaller, Monkey Knife Fight, Bet.Works, the Association of Volleyball Professionals, and Gamesys Group. Gamesys substantially expanded Bally's online casino, bingo, and gaming presence in the United Kingdom and internationally. Bally's also entered sports media through a long-term partnership with Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair's regional sports networks were rebranded Bally Sports in 2021, although the media business later experienced financial and strategic difficulties. Bally's launched Bally Live in 2023 as a streaming and sports-content service, later rebranding it Bally Sports Live. The company has continued to develop large urban casino projects, including Bally's Chicago, which opened in temporary form at Medinah Temple in 2023 while a permanent River West resort was planned. It also acquired the operating business and buildings of Tropicana Las Vegas in 2022, although the property closed and was demolished in 2024. Bally's has pursued a proposed casino at its Ferry Point golf property in the Bronx and expanded its Australian exposure through a proposed investment in Star Entertainment Group. In 2025, Bally's agreed to a transaction involving Standard General, The Queen Casino & Entertainment, and the sale of its International Interactive business to Intralot. These transactions altered the company's ownership and international structure, while the Bally's name remained associated with casino, betting, and entertainment operations.
History
Bally's Corporation traces its corporate history to BLB Investors, formed in 2004 by Starwood Capital Group, Kerzner International, and the Waterford Group. The venture sought to acquire Wembley plc, a British operator with racetracks and gaming assets in the United Kingdom and United States. In 2005, BLB acquired Lincoln Park in Rhode Island and other American properties, including Arapahoe Park and greyhound tracks in Colorado. A major redevelopment of Lincoln Park followed, and the property was renamed Twin River in 2007. The financial crisis created substantial pressure on the young company. BLB struggled with loans connected to the acquisition and redevelopment of Twin River and entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009 under a prepackaged restructuring plan. The company emerged in 2010 with ownership transferred to a lender group led by Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Sankaty Advisors. In 2011 it became Twin River Worldwide Holdings. During this period, declining interest in greyhound racing led to the closure and eventual disposal of the company's Colorado dog-racing facilities. Twin River began expanding beyond Rhode Island in the middle of the 2010s. It acquired Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi in Mississippi in 2014 and purchased Newport Grand in 2015. Newport Grand later closed, with its gaming operations moved to the newly constructed Tiverton Casino Hotel, which opened in 2018. Standard General acquired an ownership position in Twin River in 2016, and its principal partner, Soo Kim, joined the board. Kim became chairman in 2019 and helped guide the company through a period of rapid acquisition and restructuring. A reverse merger with Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment in 2019 made Twin River a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2020, it acquired seven casinos, including three properties in Black Hawk, Colorado, and casinos in Kansas City, Vicksburg, and Shreveport. That same year, Twin River purchased Bally's Atlantic City and the rights to the Bally's brand from Caesars Entertainment. In November 2020, it changed its corporate name to Bally's Corporation and adopted the BALY ticker. The new Bally's strategy combined physical casinos with digital gaming and sports entertainment. In 2021, the company acquired MontBleu in Nevada, Jumer's Casino & Hotel in Illinois, Tropicana Evansville in Indiana, SportCaller, Monkey Knife Fight, Bet.Works, the Association of Volleyball Professionals, and Gamesys Group. Gamesys gave Bally's a significant online casino and bingo presence through brands such as Virgin Games, Jackpotjoy, Monopoly Casino, Rainbow Riches Casino, Double Bubble Bingo, and Bally Casino. The company also entered sports media through a 2020 agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group, under which nineteen regional sports networks were renamed Bally Sports in 2021. Bally's continued to pursue major destination projects. Its Chicago casino proposal was approved in 2022, and a temporary casino opened at Medinah Temple in 2023 while the permanent resort was planned. Bally's also acquired the Tropicana Las Vegas operating business and buildings in 2022, but the property closed and was demolished in 2024. Proposed developments in Richmond, Virginia, and near State College, Pennsylvania, did not proceed. The company launched Bally Live in 2023 as a streaming sports service, later changing the service name to Bally Sports Live. Ownership and corporate structure became major themes in the company's later history. Standard General proposed a full acquisition in 2022, but Bally's board rejected the offer. In 2024, Bally's agreed to a new transaction involving Standard General and The Queen Casino & Entertainment. The arrangement was paired with the sale of Bally's International Interactive business to Intralot and an increased ownership interest in the resulting international entity. Bally's also pursued expansion in New York and Australia. It proposed a Bronx casino at Ferry Point and agreed in 2025 to finance Star Entertainment Group, whose Sydney and Gold Coast properties represented a potential extension of Bally's land-based operations outside the United States.
