Balloon Comics

Balloon Comics (also known as Ballon Comics) was a Dutch-language comics publisher based in Antwerp, Belgium. It operated as one of the components of Ballon Media, an organization that combined the distributor Balloon Books and the publishing house. The publisher was previously known as De Stripuitgeverij and later Mezzanine before adopting the Balloon Comics name. It published a wide range of comic series, including local Belgian favorites such as Jommeke, Biep en Zwiep, Kid Paddle, Game Over, and Sisters. The publisher was also known for comics tied to famous Flemish people and television series, such as K3 (De avonturen van K3), Flikken, The Simpsons, Jean-Michel Saive, Familie Backeljau, Windkracht 10, Get Ready!, Rugrats, and Kim Kay. In addition to original Dutch-language works, Balloon Comics handled the Dutch-language editions of comics from major Franco-Belgian publishers including Dupuis (Largo Winch, De Blauwbloezen, Robbedoes en Kwabbernoot, etc.), Dargaud (XIII, Murena, De Schorpioen, Garfield, etc.), Le Lombard (Thorgal, Alfa, I.R.$. etc.), Marsu Productions (Guust, Marsupilami, Natasja, etc.), Lucky Comics (Lucky Luke, Rataplan, Kid Lucky), Kana (Death Note, Naruto, Bleach, etc.), and Casterman (Kuifje, etc.). On 1 January 2020, Ballon Media merged with Standaard Uitgeverij, and the merged company took the name Standaard Uitgeverij. A year later, the publisher announced that several imprints, including Balloon Comics and Blloan, would disappear from 2021. Since then, the comics have been published under the Standaard Uitgeverij name.
