Ballantine's
A globally distributed Scotch whisky brand best known for blended whisky expressions.
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Ballantine's is a Scotch whisky brand produced by Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Its principal production and maturation operations are associated with Dumbarton and other Scottish distilling facilities. The brand is primarily identified with blended Scotch whisky, although its portfolio also includes blended malts, aged expressions, single-malt releases and, from 2024, a single-grain expression. The brand traces its commercial heritage to 1827, when George Ballantine established a grocery business in Edinburgh and supplied whisky alongside other provisions. The business expanded in the nineteenth century, with Ballantine opening a larger wine and spirits operation in Glasgow and developing proprietary blends. George Ballantine & Son later exported Scotch and received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1895. The family business was sold in 1919, after which successive owners developed Ballantine's more explicitly as an international blended-whisky brand. Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts acquired the business in 1937 and invested in whisky-making assets, including the Miltonduff and Glenburgie distilleries and a large grain distillery at Dumbarton. These assets helped give Ballantine's a dependable supply of malt and grain whiskies for blending. The brand expanded strongly in continental Europe during the 1960s and became particularly established in Southern European markets. It was later owned by Allied Domecq before Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq in 2005. Ballantine's core flavour profile is built around malt whiskies associated with Miltonduff and Glenburgie, combined with numerous other malt and grain components. Its range spans accessible products such as Ballantine's Finest, age-stated blends including the 12, 17, 21 and 30 Year Old expressions, and premium or limited releases. The brand has also used collaborations with musicians, visual artists, gaming properties and sports organisations to connect Scotch whisky with younger adult audiences and culture-led consumption. Ballantine's has been especially prominent in South Korea, where its aged expressions have been widely marketed as imported premium spirits. It has also maintained a substantial presence across Europe and other international markets. Industry reporting identified it as the world's second-highest-selling Scotch whisky in 2021, behind Johnnie Walker. A 2025 Brand Champions report from The Spirits Business named Ballantine's Scotch Whisky Brand Champion based on its sales performance in 2024. Its current brand activity combines mainstream blended whisky, premium age statements, limited-edition packaging, music initiatives and partnerships designed to reinforce a modern, internationally accessible identity.
History
Ballantine's began with George Ballantine, the son of a farmer, who opened a small grocery store in Edinburgh in 1827. Whisky was one of the products supplied to customers. In 1865, George delegated the Edinburgh store to his eldest son, Archibald, while establishing a larger wine and spirits business in Glasgow. The Glasgow operation increasingly focused on whisky and wine, and George began creating blends for customers. His younger son, George Ballantine junior, subsequently joined the enterprise. The business traded as George Ballantine and Son Ltd, added bonded warehousing and developed export activity. George senior retired in 1881, and George junior later assumed control. The company's reputation grew, and Queen Victoria granted it a Royal Warrant in 1895. The family sold the business in 1919 to Barclay and McKinlay. The new owners retained the established name and concentrated on developing Ballantine's as a branded blended Scotch whisky rather than merely as a trading house. Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts acquired Ballantine's in 1937. The acquisition brought substantial resources and an international route to market. The owners purchased Miltonduff and Glenburgie distilleries to secure malt-whisky supplies and built a large grain distillery at Dumbarton. In 1938, George Ballantine & Son received a Grant of Heraldic Arms, an emblem that became associated with the brand's bottle presentation and historical identity. During the 1960s, Ballantine's shifted increasing commercial attention toward continental Europe, where demand for Scotch whisky was expanding. By the middle of the decade it had established a strong regional presence, and overseas markets became more important to the business than domestic operations. In the 1980s, wider distribution and the popularity of Scotch helped the brand grow. In 1986 it was described as Europe's leading whisky brand and the world's third-largest, with Ballantine's Finest as its oldest major product. In 1987, the company became part of Allied Domecq. The large Dumbarton grain distillery was mothballed in 2002, and grain production moved to the Strathclyde Grain Distillery in Glasgow. Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq in 2005, bringing Ballantine's into the Pernod Ricard portfolio through Chivas Brothers. Ballantine's retained bonded warehousing in Dumbarton and a bottling presence near the town. Sandy Hyslop became Master Blender in 2006 and was identified as the fifth person to hold that role in the brand's roughly 180-year history at the time. South Korea became a particularly important market for Ballantine's aged expressions. Korean reporting in 2010 highlighted the popularity of the 17, 21 and 30 Year Old products, while Pernod Ricard Korea later reported that Ballantine's had been the country's most-consumed Scotch whisky over a three-year period ending in 2019, with an estimated share of approximately 28 percent. The brand subsequently broadened its cultural marketing through golf, music, gaming and artist collaborations. In 2024 it launched Ballantine's Single Distillery, its first single-grain expression. Industry reports in 2025 continued to place Ballantine's among the leading whisky brands globally.
