History
The building that now houses Baker Street Cinema was originally constructed as the Baker Street drill hall in Abergavenny, Wales. It was designed as the headquarters of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, The South Wales Borderers, and was completed in 1896. In 1908, the unit evolved to become the 3rd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment. The battalion was mobilised at the drill hall in August 1914 before being deployed to the Western Front during the First World War. After the war, the building continued to serve military purposes. In 1947, the battalion converted to become the 637th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (3rd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment), and in 1955 it evolved further to become the 638th (Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. In 1967, further reductions took place, and when the Monmouthshire line was taken up by 211 (South Wales) Battery, 104th Light Air Defence Regiment, that unit was based at Raglan Barracks in Newport. The Baker Street drill hall was then decommissioned. Following its decommissioning, the building was converted for retail use. It later became a cinema in 2010. Since then, Baker Street Cinema has operated as a two-screen independent cinema, showing current films and special events. The cinema is open nightly except Mondays, with doors typically opening 15 minutes before advertised performance times. It is fully accessible, with two wheelchair spaces in each screen, and offers online booking for all seats. A booking fee of 75p per ticket applies, and bookings are non-refundable. Remaining tickets are available at the box office on the night, with payment by cash or credit/debit card. Parking is available at the nearby Trinity Street Car Park, and babes in arms are not permitted.
