Overview

Onderzoekcentrum B-WARE (B-WARE Research Centre) is a Dutch research company based in Nijmegen. It is a spin-off of the Ecology department (formerly Aquatic Ecology & Environmental Biology) of the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) at Radboud University Nijmegen. The organisation conducts applied and scientific research into the chemical and ecological processes that determine nature quality, water management and the functioning of ecosystems. B-WARE's work combines field sampling and field experiments with controlled-condition experiments in climate chambers, and the analysis of collected water and soil samples in its own laboratory. Its expertise therefore spans the full chain from fieldwork and experimental ecology to chemical analysis and scientific reporting. The centre is active in Dutch nature conservation and water-management practice, and its researchers publish in international peer-reviewed journals such as Forest Ecology and Management and the Journal of Environmental Management. Beyond research projects, B-WARE provides courses, for example on water and nature management in low-peat and peat-meadow landscapes, and participates in public science events such as the Weekend of Science. Its clientele and partners include nature managers, water authorities, provinces and other public bodies concerned with ecological restoration and environmental policy. The company is a private, independent entity rather than a listed corporation. It is registered in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and operates primarily in the Dutch market, while contributing to international scientific literature and European ecological-restoration practice.

History

Onderzoekcentrum B-WARE is a spin-off company of the Ecology department (formerly Aquatic Ecology & Environmental Biology) of the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) at Radboud University Nijmegen. This academic origin shapes the organisation's identity: it was created to translate university research capacity in aquatic and environmental ecology into applied, contract-based research for nature managers, water authorities and policymakers. From its base in Nijmegen, the centre has built a research practice centred on the chemical and ecological processes that determine nature quality, water management and the functioning of ecosystems. Its methods combine field sampling and field experiments with controlled experiments in climate chambers, supported by an in-house laboratory for the analysis of water and soil samples. This integrated approach allows B-WARE to work on questions ranging from soil acidification and restoration of shallow lakes to the future of fens in wet sandy landscapes. Over time the centre has developed a portfolio that includes scientific publication in international journals, applied monitoring and advice, and professional education. Its researchers have contributed to peer-reviewed work in journals such as Forest Ecology and Management and the Journal of Environmental Management, including studies on silicate rock powder as a mitigation for soil acidification in old oak forests and on the restoration of the shallow lake Kralingse Plas using lanthanum-modified bentonite. B-WARE also engages with public debate and policy. In October 2025 it published a response to the report 'De Veluwe als toetssteen. Ecologische monitoring als fundament voor natuurbeleid' (Prins, 2025), reflecting its role as a scientific voice in Dutch nature policy discussions. It participates in public outreach such as the Weekend of Science and offers courses on water and nature management in low-peat and peat-meadow landscapes. The company remains a private, independent research organisation registered in Nijmegen.
