Overview
The Bürgerstiftung Braunschweig is a community foundation based in Braunschweig, Germany. It was founded on 18 September 2003 during a ceremony in the Dornse of the Braunschweig Altstadtrathaus, initiated largely by a lecture given by the then Lower Saxony Minister of Justice, Christian Pfeiffer, in August 2002. Under the motto "Mitdenken – Mittragen – Mitgestalten" (Think along – Support – Shape), the foundation aims to promote social and cultural activities in the city. In 2022, it supported 177 projects and invested €868,121 in projects. Including the trust foundations and legally independent foundations it administers, the foundation's endowment capital amounted to around €20.5 million as of 2022. The foundation develops its own projects and carries them out with the support of many volunteers. Examples of its own projects include "Auf dem Weg zum Buch" (reading promotion in Braunschweig schools and daycare centers), "Radeln ohne Alter" (cycling without age), "BürgerSport im Park", and the "Bürgersingen" (citizens' singing). In 2020, the Bürgerstiftung published the first "Braunschweig imPuls" report, a booklet with facts and figures about Braunschweig intended to motivate civic engagement; a second edition followed in 2022. The foundation is known to a broad Braunschweig public through its organization of the "Braunschweiger Bürger-Brunch". In 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2016, up to 1,000 beer tent sets were set up in the old town and rented to citizens for brunching, accompanied by food stalls and stages with music and entertainment. The proceeds benefited the Bürgerstiftung. On 17 September 2023, the Bürgerbrunch took place for the last time on the occasion of the foundation's 20th anniversary. The Bürgerstiftung Braunschweig is a signatory to the Initiative Transparente Zivilgesellschaft (Transparent Civil Society Initiative). Since April 2015, it has held the quality seal for good trust foundation administration, and since 2004 the seal of the Arbeitskreis Bürgerstiftungen (Working Group of Community Foundations). It also manages three independent foundations and numerous trust foundations. The foundation's main goal is to ensure that Braunschweig remains a socially peaceful, culturally diverse, active, and lively city, worth living in today and in the future.
