Overview

Böhmisch Brauhaus Großröhrsdorf was a German brewery based in Großröhrsdorf, in the federal state of Saxony. It traced its origins to 1887, when a brewery was established in the town with financing from the local Großmann entrepreneurial family and with Albin Nestler as its first tenant. For decades it was a regional lager brewery, producing roughly 14,000 hectolitres of beer per year up to the beginning of the First World War. During the war years of 1916–1917 production was switched to mineral water, before beer brewing resumed after the end of the First World War. The brewery was substantially expanded and modernised in the 1930s and again in the 1960s. In 1972 it was nationalised under the East German state, and in 1975 it was incorporated as Betriebsteil Werk Bautzen into the VEB Dresdner Brauereien combine. After die Wende, the peaceful revolution and German reunification, the brewery was reprivatised in 1990 and modernised over the following years. From 2008 it operated under the name Böhmisch Brauhaus Großröhrsdorf GmbH, registered at the Dresden commercial court (HRB 26643). Its product range included Böhmisch Brauhaus Pilsner, Eisbier, Edel Sünde (a Schwarzbier), a seasonal Bockbier and a Helles Vollbier. The company was managed by Stefan Tentler as Geschäftsführer. In September 2022 the closure of the brewery was announced; the last beer was bottled in February 2023, ending more than 130 years of brewing tradition in Großröhrsdorf. The official website now states that the Böhmisch Brauhaus has closed.

History

The brewery was founded in 1887 in Großröhrsdorf, Saxony. Its construction was financed by the local Großmann entrepreneurial family, and Albin Nestler became the first tenant of the brewery. Up to the beginning of the First World War, the brewery produced approximately 14,000 hectolitres of beer per year. During the First World War, in 1916–1917, production was converted to mineral water because of the war. After the end of the First World War, the brewery resumed beer production. In the 1930s and again in the 1960s the enterprise was fundamentally expanded and modernised. In 1972 it was nationalised, and in 1975 it was incorporated as Betriebsteil Werk Bautzen into the VEB Dresdner Brauereien, the state-owned Dresden breweries combine of the German Democratic Republic. After die Wende, the brewery was reprivatised in 1990 and modernised in the following years. From 2008 it was operated under the name Böhmisch Brauhaus Großröhrsdorf GmbH, registered at the Dresden commercial court under HRB 26643. The company was led by Stefan Tentler as Geschäftsführer. In September 2022 the closure of the brewery was announced. The last beer was bottled in February 2023, and brewing operations were then discontinued, ending more than 130 years of brewing tradition in Großröhrsdorf. The official website now states that the Böhmisch Brauhaus has closed.
