History
Azuli Records was established in London in 1991 by DJ Dave Piccioni. Piccioni had been exposed to New York’s influential house community and had developed practical experience selling dance records in London. In 1990, he took over the Black Market Records shop, a specialist retail outlet that helped connect him with the city’s developing club and DJ networks. The label followed the next year, at a time when London’s acid-house movement and related underground scenes were producing a growing demand for new dance music. Azuli’s early catalogue reflected both local and transatlantic influences. The label’s first release was Chocolate Fudge’s “In A Fantasy.” Its initial reputation developed more quickly in specialist press and among DJs than in conventional sales figures, but sustained activity gradually gave the company credibility. Azuli concentrated on house and adjacent electronic styles rather than attempting to operate as a broad-based pop label. The label’s commercial profile strengthened during the second half of the 1990s. David Morales’s “Needin’ U,” issued in 1998, became a defining Azuli release. It was followed by notable records such as Eclipse’s “Makes Me Love You” in 1999 and Afro Medusa’s “Pasilda” in 2000. The latter reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart in October 2000. These releases demonstrated how a specialist house imprint could retain club credibility while achieving visibility in the wider recorded-music market. Azuli expanded beyond individual singles into a broad programme of albums and compilations. Its catalogue ultimately included more than 200 singles, with reference descriptions also recording 278 singles released on the Azuli label and over 60 albums. A major part of this output consisted of DJ-led compilations. The Choice series invited respected DJs and producers to select tracks representing their own tastes, histories, or approaches to house music. Editions were connected with artists and selectors including Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia, François K, Tony Humphries, Derrick L. Carter, Jeff Mills, John Digweed, X-Press 2, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Danny Howells, Roger Sanchez, and others. The label also developed a network of themed compilation brands. Miami releases drew on the city’s importance in international dance culture, while Space and Space Ibiza titles were linked to Ibiza’s club ecosystem. Made in Italy and other projects broadened the geographical and stylistic frame. Club Azuli focused on current dancefloor music and appeared in both mixed and unmixed formats, allowing the releases to work as listening compilations and DJ resources. Club Azuli was also used for an events programme that brought the brand to clubs in different countries. This combination of singles, retrospective projects, contemporary compilations, and events made Azuli one of the United Kingdom’s longest-running house labels. It functioned as both a release platform and a cultural curator, using recognizable DJs and club destinations to organize a large and changing body of electronic music. The company went into liquidation in April 2009. Some of its back catalogue was subsequently sold to Phoenix Music International Ltd. Piccioni later relaunched Azuli, with Defected Records administering the revived label. In 2012, Azuli was sold to Defected Records. The available reference does not establish a definitive current release schedule or operating structure, so the brand’s present status remains uncertain. Historically, however, Azuli’s catalogue preserves an important period in the development of British house music and the globalization of DJ-centered dance culture.
