Overview
AYELET - Israeli Thematic Philately Association (Hebrew: איל"ת – אגודה ישראלית לבולאות תימאטית) is a non-profit association (amuta) whose purpose is to unite thematic stamp collectors in Israel, to promote the collection of stamps and postal items by theme, and to foster mutual assistance in collecting, philatelic research and exhibition display. It is a member of the Israel Philatelic Federation (Hitachdut Bulai Yisrael) and works to integrate Israeli collectors into international thematic collecting activity. Thematic collecting, as defined by the association, presents and develops a story about a chosen subject and includes a wide range of postal material — not only stamps but also covers, postcards, air letters, cancellations and more. The main difference between thematic collecting and other branches of philately (traditional, aerophilately, postal history, general collections, astrophilately, maximum cards) lies in the use of the philatelic material: the emphasis is on the subject or content of the item and what it represents. A theme may be chosen freely according to the content of the items or according to the special purpose for which the material was issued (for example, for Olympic Games or international organizations). Thematic collecting recognizes no geographical, time or usage boundaries and requires detailed knowledge both of the subject itself and of the philatelic material on that subject. The association was founded at a constituent assembly held on 9 October 1990 during the national stamp exhibition "Be'er Sheva 90" at Beit Yad LaBanim, Sderot HaNesi'im, Be'er Sheva. Its founders and provisional committee were Nahum Shershevsky, Menachem Lador, Michael Hirshfeld, Shalom Berger and Arie Lavi. The first general meeting took place on 26 March 1991 with 62 members present, and Menachem Lador was elected chairman. AYELET publishes several periodicals for its members: "Noseon" (נושׂאון), a printed booklet issued four times a year and mailed to members, whose first unnamed version appeared on 1 June 1990 and which took its current name with issue no. 7 in July 1991; "Noseonet" (נושׂאונט), an electronic journal distributed by e-mail four times a year and described as the first online journal in Hebrew on philately, first published on 15 January 2007 and edited by Yoram Luvianiker; and "Noseonchik" (נושׂאונצ'יק), an electronic journal for young collectors, first published on 1 January 2008 and edited by Shavit Talman. The association organizes exhibitor training courses, auctions and member meetings, and its members receive all the services of the Israel Philatelic Federation, including the federation journal "Shoval", thematic and general philatelic library services, and conferences and lectures. Internationally, AYELET encourages its members to participate and exhibit in local and international thematic stamp exhibitions and contributes by sending expert Israeli thematic judges to such exhibitions. At the biennial committee elections held on 16 March 2017, Yitzhak Barak was elected chairman, Menachem Lador deputy chairman, Ran Barash secretary and website editor, Shlomo Vorgan treasurer, and Yoram Luvianiker and Dr. Yehoshua Magger committee members; the audit committee comprised Yitzhak Mi-Raz (chair), Arie Lavi and Paolo Duak.
History
AYELET - Israeli Thematic Philately Association was established at a constituent assembly held on 9 October 1990 (5th of Chol HaMoed Sukkot, 5751) during the national stamp exhibition "Be'er Sheva 90" at Beit Yad LaBanim, Sderot HaNesi'im, Be'er Sheva. The founders and members of the provisional committee were Nahum Shershevsky, Menachem Lador, Michael Hirshfeld, Shalom Berger and Arie Lavi. The association's first general meeting was held on 26 March 1991 with 62 members present, at which Menachem Lador was elected chairman. The association's publishing activity actually predates its formal founding: the first, unnamed version of its journal appeared on 1 June 1990. The second issue, published three months later, was titled "Timateon". With issue no. 7, published in July 1991, the journal took the name "Noseon", which remains its name to this day. In the 2000s AYELET expanded into electronic publishing: "Noseonet", an electronic journal distributed by e-mail four times a year and described as the first online journal in Hebrew on philately, was first published on 15 January 2007 under the editorship of Yoram Luvianiker, who continued to edit it. "Noseonchik", an electronic journal aimed at young collectors and youth, was first published on 1 January 2008; in its first decade it was distributed by e-mail twelve times a year, and subsequently six times a year, edited by Shavit Talman. AYELET is a member of the Israel Philatelic Federation and works to integrate Israeli collectors into international thematic collecting activity. It organizes exhibitor training courses, auctions and member meetings, and its members receive all the services of the Israel Philatelic Federation, including the federation journal "Shoval", thematic and general philatelic library services, and conferences and lectures. Internationally, the association encourages its members to participate and exhibit in local and international thematic stamp exhibitions and contributes by sending expert Israeli thematic judges to such exhibitions. At the biennial committee elections held on 16 March 2017, the following members were elected: Yitzhak Barak as chairman, Menachem Lador as deputy chairman, Ran Barash as secretary and editor of the association's website, Shlomo Vorgan as treasurer, and Yoram Luvianiker and Dr. Yehoshua Magger as committee members. The audit committee comprised Yitzhak Mi-Raz as chair, Arie Lavi and Paolo Duak.
