Overview
Axis Bank Limited is an Indian banking and financial-services company headquartered in Mumbai. It is one of the country’s major private-sector banks, serving individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises, large corporations, institutional clients and non-resident Indians. Its activities cover deposits, payments, consumer lending, mortgages, vehicle and business finance, credit cards, wealth and investment products, transaction banking, foreign exchange, trade finance, investment banking, securities services and trustee activities. The institution was established on 3 December 1993 as UTI Bank. It was promoted by the Administrator of the Unit Trust of India together with Life Insurance Corporation of India, General Insurance Corporation and several state-owned general insurers. The bank opened its first branch in Ahmedabad in April 1994, while its corporate office was located in Mumbai. The original ownership and sponsorship structure connected the new bank to India’s public financial institutions, although the bank subsequently developed as a listed commercial enterprise with broad institutional and public shareholding. UTI Bank expanded its distribution and international capabilities during the 2000s. It listed global depositary receipts in London, opened an overseas branch in Singapore, and established additional offices in Shanghai, Dubai, Hong Kong and other financial centres. On 30 July 2007, it adopted the Axis Bank name. The rebranding separated the bank from the UTI identity and supported its development as a broader financial-services franchise. Axis Bank operates a large Indian branch, ATM and digital-banking network. Its retail business provides savings and current accounts, cards, personal loans, home loans, deposits, investment products, depository services, internet banking and NRI services. Its corporate and institutional businesses provide cash management, government collections, trade and supply-chain finance, foreign exchange, derivatives, correspondent banking, capital-markets services and corporate lending. Subsidiaries and affiliated businesses extend the franchise into investment banking, retail securities, finance, trustee services and mutual funds. The bank has also used acquisitions and partnerships to strengthen its digital and consumer businesses. In 2017 it acquired FreeCharge, a digital financial-services marketplace. In 2023 it completed the acquisition of Citibank India’s consumer banking business, adding consumer loans, credit cards, deposits and related customer relationships to its platform. In 2025 it partnered with J.P. Morgan on real-time US-dollar payment capabilities for commercial clients in India. Axis Bank remains listed in India and has also had securities or debt instruments represented on overseas exchanges.
History
Axis Bank was founded on 3 December 1993 as UTI Bank. It was created through the sponsorship of the Administrator of the Unit Trust of India and several public-sector insurance institutions, including Life Insurance Corporation of India, General Insurance Corporation, National Insurance Company, New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance and United India Insurance. The bank’s registered office was in Ahmedabad and its corporate office was in Mumbai. Its first branch opened in Ahmedabad on 2 April 1994. During its early development, UTI Bank built a commercial-banking platform serving retail customers and businesses. In 2001 it agreed in principle to merge with Global Trust Bank, but the Reserve Bank of India did not approve the transaction. Global Trust Bank was later placed under a regulatory moratorium and merged with Oriental Bank of Commerce. The episode did not prevent UTI Bank from continuing its own expansion. The bank became increasingly connected to domestic and international capital markets. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange through global depositary receipts in 2005 and began developing an overseas network. In 2006 it opened its first international branch in Singapore and an office in Shanghai. In 2007 it established a branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre and opened branches in Hong Kong. On 30 July 2007, UTI Bank changed its name to Axis Bank, creating the brand used today. Axis Bank expanded its range of financial services through subsidiaries and specialist businesses. Axis Capital developed investment-banking and capital-markets activities, while Axis Securities provided retail brokerage and other investment products. Axis Finance, Axis Trustee Services, Axis Private Equity and Axis Mutual Fund extended the group into lending, trusteeship, investment management and fund activities. The bank also maintained an international business focused mainly on corporate banking, trade finance, treasury, syndication, investment banking and liability products. Shikha Sharma became managing director and chief executive in 2009. During the following decade the bank continued to grow its branch, ATM and digital presence while serving retail, corporate and institutional customers. In 2013 its wholly owned subsidiary Axis Bank UK began banking operations. The Indian government reduced part of its stake in the bank in 2014, contributing to a broader shareholder base. In 2017 Axis Bank acquired FreeCharge, giving it a digital marketplace and technology-oriented consumer-business asset. The bank faced regulatory and reputational challenges. Operation Red Spider in 2013 alleged that employees of several banks, including Axis Bank, were involved in improper customer arrangements and money-laundering methods; the Reserve Bank of India imposed a penalty on Axis Bank. Following India’s 2016 demonetisation, employees were arrested in separate alleged money-laundering cases. These events placed attention on customer due diligence, incentive structures and internal controls. Amitabh Chaudhry became managing director and chief executive on 1 January 2019. Axis Bank subsequently reduced its holding in Yes Bank in 2021. In 2023 it completed the acquisition of Citibank India’s consumer banking business for 12,325 crore Indian rupees, a major expansion of its cards, deposits and consumer-finance franchise. In 2024, Axis Capital faced a restriction from SEBI concerning debt assignments associated with irregularities in a non-convertible debenture issue. In 2025 Axis Bank announced a partnership with J.P. Morgan to support real-time US-dollar payments for commercial clients in India. The bank’s Indian network and international offices continue to support a diversified banking model spanning retail, corporate, investment and cross-border services.
