Overview

The Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit is a private foundation whose primary purpose is promoting scientific and scholarly research, with a current focus on the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1947 by Consul-General Axel Ax:son Johnson, owner of the Nordstjernan Group, and his wife Margaret. The foundation works in three areas — research and education, seminars, and publishing — and runs publishing and broadcasting initiatives through Axess Publishing, Engelsberg Ideas and Bokförlaget Stolpe. It funds individuals and collaborates with external academic partners, and initiates its own research projects rather than accepting applications.

History

The Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit is a private foundation with the primary purpose of promoting scientific and scholarly research. It was founded in 1947 by the Consul-General Axel Ax:son Johnson (1876–1958), owner of the Nordstjernan Group, and his wife, Margaret (1887–1966). The Ax:son Johnson family, for which the foundation is named, has a long history of philanthropy. Since 1999 the foundation has brought together world-leading scholars and thinkers at its seminars, and applied history has been established as a recurring theme through the Engelsberg seminar since 1999. The foundation funds research and education centers at the Stockholm School of Economics, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, and its Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy carries out research and education activities in statecraft, including collaboration with the Stockholm School of Economics, University of Cambridge, King's College London and Johns Hopkins University. Since 2014 the foundation has organised the international seminar series Museums of the World, and since 2020 it has awarded grants in the form of free board and lodging at Engelsberg Ironworks in central Sweden.
