Overview
Axa Investment Managers, commonly known as AXA IM, was the global investment-management arm of French insurance group AXA. The business developed from AXA’s effort to separate and professionalize investment management from its insurance operating lines. An initial subsidiary, AXA Asset Management, was created in 1994 under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Hellebuyck. In 1997, Henri de Castries established the broader AXA Investment Managers organization, with Donald Brydon selected as its chief executive. AXA IM built a diversified investment platform covering public and private markets. Its activities included fixed income, active equities, quantitative equities, structured finance, real assets, private equity, hedge funds and other alternative investments. The company served insurance companies, pension funds, sovereign and other institutional investors, financial intermediaries, wealth clients and, through investment products, individual investors. Its international expansion included investment-management joint ventures and operating platforms in China, South Korea and India, as well as offices and investment capabilities in major European, North American and Asia-Pacific markets. The company’s platform was enlarged through a series of acquisitions and internal developments. In 1999 it acquired a controlling interest in California-based Rosenberg Group, an active quantitative global-equity manager that became Rosenberg Equities. AXA Real Estate Investment Managers was also established in 1999 and later formed the basis of the Real Assets platform. In 2005 AXA IM acquired Framlington Group from HSBC Holdings and Comerica, creating a significant long-term active-equity capability known as Framlington Equities. Other additions included the Chorus hedge-fund platform, Asia-Pacific real-assets manager Eureka Funds Management and, in 2024, W Capital Partners, a specialist in GP-led and secondary private-equity transactions. Responsible investment and environmental, social and governance integration became important elements of the firm’s positioning. AXA IM presented itself as a broad, research-led manager able to combine public-market strategies with private assets and real assets, while drawing on the balance sheet, insurance expertise and international network of AXA Group. Its products and mandates included institutional portfolios, mutual funds, alternative vehicles and investment solutions rather than a single consumer-facing product franchise. AXA IM also experienced significant operational and strategic changes. In 2011, its quantitative subsidiary Axa Rosenberg paid approximately US$242 million in connection with regulatory settlements concerning a coding error, the concealment of the error from clients and resulting investment losses. The episode damaged the unit and led to the reorganization of its quantitative business. In 2023, the company registered as a crypto-asset service provider in France and was reported to be planning reductions of approximately 90 positions from a workforce of about 2,600 at the end of 2022. In 2024 AXA and BNP Paribas began publicly reported discussions concerning the combination of AXA IM and BNP Paribas Asset Management. A transaction valued at approximately US$5.32 billion was signed in December 2024. BNP Paribas Cardif announced completion of the acquisition on 1 July 2025, alongside an arrangement under which BNP Paribas would continue managing part of AXA Group’s assets. On 31 December 2025, AXA IM’s activities were merged into BNP Paribas Asset Management, ending AXA Investment Managers as a standalone legal entity.
History
AXA began building a dedicated investment-management capability in 1994, when it established AXA Asset Management outside the group’s insurance business lines. Jean-Pierre Hellebuyck headed the initial organization. In 1997, Henri de Castries launched AXA Investment Managers, incorporating the earlier AXA Asset Management operation, and Donald Brydon was chosen as chief executive. The group expanded into specialist investment capabilities during the late 1990s. Dominique Senequier joined AXA in 1996 and founded its private-equity platform. That operation remained within AXA IM until its 2013 separation, when it was renamed Ardian. In 1999, AXA IM paid US$125 million for a controlling stake in California-based Rosenberg Group. The business became Rosenberg Equities and served as AXA IM’s quantitative-equity platform. AXA Real Estate Investment Managers was also established in 1999 and later evolved into the Real Assets platform. A Structure Finance division followed in 2002. In 2005, AXA IM bought Framlington Group from HSBC Holdings and Comerica for US$342.5 million. Framlington was subsequently incorporated into AXA IM as Framlington Equities, providing a long-term active-equity management capability. International development continued through joint ventures. AXA IM and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank created AXA SPDB Investment Managers in China in 2006. In 2008, AXA IM and Kyobo Life Insurance established Kyobo AXA Investment Managers in South Korea. In 2012, AXA IM and Bank of India established BOI AXA Investment Managers and BOI AXA Trustee Services in India. The firm’s quantitative-equity activities suffered a major setback in 2011. Axa Rosenberg paid approximately US$242 million in connection with settlements involving a coding error that had affected investment decisions, the failure to disclose the issue to clients and resulting losses. The episode caused severe damage to the business and led to the collapse and subsequent reorganization of the Axa Rosenberg operation. The quantitative platform was later represented within AXA IM as AXA IM Equity Quantitative Investments. AXA IM continued developing alternative and real-asset capabilities. It established the Chorus hedge-fund platform in 2016, while its Real Assets division acquired Sydney-based Eureka Funds Management in the same year to broaden its Asia-Pacific presence. In April 2024, AXA IM acquired W Capital Partners, adding expertise in GP-led and secondary private-equity investments. The company also registered as a crypto-asset service provider in France in March 2023. The final phase of AXA IM’s history was defined by consolidation. In July 2024, reports described negotiations to combine AXA IM and BNP Paribas Asset Management in a venture between AXA and BNP Paribas, with the potential combined platform associated with approximately €1.4 trillion in assets under management. The parties signed a transaction in December 2024, reported at approximately US$5.32 billion. BNP Paribas Cardif announced completion on 1 July 2025 and stated that AXA Group would retain an asset-management partnership with BNP Paribas. On 31 December 2025, AXA IM’s activities were merged into BNP Paribas Asset Management, ending AXA Investment Managers as an independent legal entity.
