Overview
Axa Bank Belgium was a Belgian banking institution associated first with AXA Group and later with the Belgian cooperative bank Crelan. Its core business was retail banking for individuals and small companies in Belgium, delivered in part through a network of independent bank agents. The bank also cooperated with AXA’s Belgian insurance company, linking banking services with the broader group’s insurance distribution and customer relationships. The institution became part of a wider European banking project during the late 2000s. In June 2007, AXA’s management board approved a common European banking strategy. The former Belgian banking structure was used to establish AXA Bank Europe, a Brussels-based European banking head office. This structure supported banking activities and branches in several markets. AXA Life Europe Hedging Services joined AXA Bank Europe in 2008, adding financial-engineering capabilities relevant to AXA’s insurance businesses and the banking organization. The European platform subsequently included the Hungarian Ella Bank as a branch from 2009, a Swiss branch from 2009, a Czech branch from 2010, and a Slovak branch from 2011. The European expansion was later reversed. In 2014, AXA launched a transformation program that refocused the organization on Belgian retail banking. From the summer of 2015, AXA Bank Europe’s teams worked from the former Anhyp building in Berchem, Antwerp. In June 2017, the bank changed its name back to Axa Bank Belgium, reflecting the renewed emphasis on the Belgian market and the winding down or separation of several international activities. The strategic ownership of the bank changed in 2019. In October of that year, AXA Group agreed to sell Axa Bank Belgium to Crelan for €620 million. The transaction was intended to bring together two Belgian banking businesses and was accompanied by the acquisition of AXA’s Belgian insurance company by Crelan. The deal was completed in December 2021. Separately, the Swiss activities were transferred to ZweiPlus Bank on 1 January 2021, while the Hungarian banking business had already been placed into run-off and was later sold to OTP Bank. Under Crelan ownership, Axa Bank Belgium continued as a distinct banking entity for a period while integration proceeded. The bank’s legal and operational identity ultimately ended when it was incorporated into Crelan in 2025. It should therefore be understood as a historical Belgian retail-bank brand and legal entity rather than an active standalone bank. Its principal legacy is the development of AXA’s Belgian banking platform, its temporary role as a European banking hub, and its contribution to the consolidation of the Belgian banking and insurance operations later brought together under Crelan.
History
Axa Bank Belgium originated as the Belgian banking platform associated with AXA Group. In June 2007, AXA’s management board adopted a common European banking strategy. The former Belgian legal structure was then used to create AXA Bank Europe, a European banking head office based in Brussels. This arrangement temporarily transformed the Belgian bank from a primarily national operation into the legal and organizational center of a broader European banking network. The new structure expanded through a combination of branches and transferred activities. In 2008, AXA Life Europe Hedging Services joined AXA Bank Europe, contributing financial-engineering expertise intended to support AXA’s insurance companies and banking activities. In 2009, Hungary’s Ella Bank became a branch of AXA Bank Europe. AXA also launched a branch in Switzerland in 2009, followed by branches in the Czech Republic in 2010 and Slovakia in 2011. The Hungarian operation concentrated on mortgage lending from July 2009 and distributed products through mortgage centers, tied insurance agents, and online channels. Its commercial activities were placed into run-off from 1 January 2012, and AXA later agreed to sell the Hungarian banking operations to OTP Bank in 2016. AXA subsequently reassessed the European banking model. A transformation plan launched in 2014 redirected the organization toward Belgian retail banking. From the summer of 2015, the teams of AXA Bank Europe operated from the former Anhyp building in Berchem, Antwerp. The bank changed its name back to Axa Bank Belgium in June 2017, marking the end of the AXA Bank Europe branding and the renewed emphasis on serving Belgian individuals and small businesses. In Belgium, the bank relied on independent bank agents and maintained cooperation with AXA’s local insurance company. The next major turning point was the sale to Crelan. In October 2019, AXA Group agreed to sell Axa Bank Belgium to Crelan for €620 million. The transaction formed part of a broader reorganization of AXA’s Belgian financial-services presence: Crelan also acquired AXA’s Belgian insurance company. Although announced in 2019, the transaction was completed in December 2021. The Swiss activities were transferred separately to ZweiPlus Bank on 1 January 2021. After the acquisition, Axa Bank Belgium continued for a time as a separate entity within the Crelan group while integration proceeded. Its independent existence ended in 2025, when it was incorporated into Crelan. The brand is consequently defunct as a standalone banking institution. Its historical significance lies in its dual role as AXA’s Belgian retail bank and as the temporary legal base for AXA’s European banking expansion.

Axa Bank Belgium cooperated with AXA’s Belgian insurance company, allowing banking activity to operate alongside the group’s insurance relationships. This cooperation was part of the broader AXA bancassurance model rather than evidence that the bank itself was solely an insurance provider.
