Overview
AWAL, an initialism of Artists Without A Label, is a global recording business that provides music distribution, marketing, promotion, data, licensing, and other artist services without requiring artists to surrender the ownership and control normally associated with a conventional record deal. Its model combines the infrastructure and expertise of a major-label operation with deal structures intended to give independent artists and labels greater control over their recordings and careers. The business traces its origins to AWAL US, founded in 1997 by Denzyl Feigelson in Ojai, California, with mentorship from Andrew Ungerleider. In 2004, the US operation joined forces with record producers Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby. Separately, Paul Bower had operated the AWAL Sheffield office since 2004. The United Kingdom business was acquired by Kobalt Music Group in December 2012 and became Kobalt's digital music-distribution arm. AWAL expanded substantially under Kobalt. In January 2018, Lonny Olinick was appointed chief executive of Kobalt's recording division. In March of that year, Kobalt announced a $150 million investment in AWAL and said its recording activities would be consolidated under the AWAL name. The company subsequently broadened its capabilities through the acquisition of In2une Music, a multi-format radio-promotion business, in June 2018, and through a strategic partnership with independent label Glassnote Records announced in November 2018. The company's service offering includes global marketing and creative support, A&R, playlist promotion, radio promotion, publicity, synchronization licensing, brand partnerships, and access to real-time music data and audience insights. In March 2017, AWAL introduced an analytics application intended to collect and display information about an artist's presence on services including Spotify and Apple Music. Its financial proposition has been presented as more favorable to artists than many traditional label arrangements; Billboard reported in 2018 that AWAL could pay artists as much as 80 percent of streaming revenue, although specific terms vary by agreement. AWAL has distributed and supported releases associated with artists including Steve Lacy, Finneas, Little Simz, Girl in Red, deadmau5, JVKE, Jungle, Disclosure, Rex Orange County, Tom Misch, and Laufey. Its broader network has also included or worked with labels such as Glassnote Records, mau5trap, Good Soldier Songs, Nickelodeon Records, B-Unique Records, SideOneDummy Records, World in Red, Chess Club Records, and Bright Antenna Records. Releases associated with the company span alternative, indie, electronic, hip-hop, pop, and other contemporary music categories. Sony Music announced its acquisition of AWAL from Kobalt Music Group in 2021. The transaction attracted scrutiny from the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority, which raised concerns in September 2021 that the purchase could reduce competition in music distribution. The CMA opened a phase-two investigation later that month and ultimately cleared the transaction on March 16, 2022, following consultation and consideration of the parties' responses. AWAL operates internationally, with offices reported in London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Stockholm, Mexico City, Madrid, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Paris, and Toronto. The company has received recognition in industry rankings, including Billboard's 2018 Digital Power Players list and its 2023 International Power Players list. In 2023, Billboard also named Lonny Olinick, Pete Giberga, and Paul Hitchman among its Indie Power Players.
History
AWAL originated in the United States in 1997, when Denzyl Feigelson founded AWAL US in Ojai, California, with mentoring assistance from Andrew Ungerleider. The operation later joined forces with record producers Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby in 2004. During the same period, Paul Bower ran the company's Sheffield office, establishing an early United Kingdom presence. A major structural change came in December 2012, when Kobalt Music Group acquired AWAL UK. Under Kobalt, AWAL served as a digital music-distribution arm, offering independent artists and labels a route to market that differed from the conventional advance-and-ownership structure of major record companies. The company focused on using digital distribution, marketing, data, and artist development to support acts while allowing them to retain control of their recordings under applicable agreements. In March 2017, AWAL expanded its technology offering by launching a music analytics application. The tool was designed to gather and present information from services such as Spotify and Apple Music, giving artists a more immediate view of their audience and streaming performance. Data became an important part of AWAL's value proposition alongside distribution and promotional services. Kobalt intensified its investment in the recording business in 2018. Lonny Olinick was appointed chief executive of Kobalt's recording division in January, and in March Kobalt announced a $150 million investment in AWAL. It also stated that its recording activities would be unified under the AWAL name. In June, AWAL acquired In2une Music, adding multi-format radio-promotion capabilities for independent artists and labels. In November, it announced a strategic partnership with Glassnote Records, extending its relationships within the independent-label sector. The company developed a broad service portfolio encompassing A&R, global marketing, creative services, playlist and radio promotion, publicity, synchronization licensing, brand partnerships, and real-time music intelligence. Its commercial model was promoted as an alternative to the traditional label system. Billboard reported in 2018 that AWAL agreements could provide artists with as much as 80 percent of streaming revenue, although the exact economics depended on individual contracts and services. AWAL's roster and distribution network became associated with a wide range of contemporary artists, including Steve Lacy, Finneas, Little Simz, Girl in Red, deadmau5, JVKE, Jungle, Disclosure, Rex Orange County, Tom Misch, and Laufey. Releases connected with the business covered indie rock, alternative pop, electronic music, hip-hop, R&B, and other genres. AWAL also worked with or distributed music for independent labels including Glassnote Records, mau5trap, Good Soldier Songs, Nickelodeon Records, B-Unique Records, SideOneDummy Records, World in Red, Chess Club Records, and Bright Antenna Records. Sony Music agreed to acquire AWAL from Kobalt in 2021. The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority expressed concern on September 7 that the deal might reduce competition in music distribution. Sony and AWAL were given an opportunity to address those concerns with legally binding remedies; after the concerns were not resolved at the initial stage, the CMA opened a phase-two investigation on September 16. Following a consultation that concluded on March 4, 2022, the regulator cleared the transaction on March 16, 2022. Following the acquisition, AWAL remained an international artist-services and distribution business within Sony Music's wider group. Its reported office network includes London, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Stockholm, Mexico City, Madrid, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Paris, and Toronto. Industry recognition continued with AWAL's inclusion in Billboard's 2018 Digital Power Players list and 2023 International Power Players list, while Lonny Olinick, Pete Giberga, and Paul Hitchman were recognized in Billboard's 2023 Indie Power Players coverage.
