Overview
AFS Aviation Fuel Services GmbH is a German aviation services company specialising in aircraft refuelling, tank farm management, and the design and construction of airport fuel farms and airfield refuelling vehicles. Founded in 1986 as a 50/50 joint venture between Lufthansa Commercial Holding GmbH and VEBA Oel AG, the company is headquartered in Hamburg and describes itself as the market leader in Germany. It operates its own aircraft refuelling services at five major German airports, including the country's two largest, Frankfurt and Munich, and also manages refuelling and/or tank farm operations for customers at further major German airports. Across its network it refuels an average of 800 aircraft per day, ranging from small general aviation aircraft to the Airbus A380. AFS supplies the aviation fuels JET A-1 and AvGas 100 LL. Beyond refuelling, it offers customised tank farm and hydrant management, taking responsibility for the operation and management of customer installations and technical infrastructure. The company operates through a family of joint-venture and subsidiary entities at individual airports, including Frankfurt Fuelling Services, Hamburg Fuelling Services, Hamburg Tank Services, Tankdienst-Gesellschaft Hamburg, Düsseldorf Fuelling Services, Langenhagen Fuelling Services, Tanklagergesellschaft Hannover-Langenhagen, Tankdienst-Gesellschaft Nürnberg, Turbo Fuel Services Sachsen (Leipzig and Dresden), and Austrian operations at Vienna-Schwechat, Salzburg and Linz. In total AFS reports 14 locations in Germany and Austria. Since 1986 the company has expanded from its first tank operation at Munich-Riem Airport with 14 employees and six vehicles to a nationwide and cross-border service network. After German reunification it took over the former VEB Kombinat Minol airport tank operations in Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt and Berlin-Schönefeld. Its IT subsidiary GlobeFuel Systems & Services GmbH, founded in Hamburg in 2003, markets the Fuel Handling System (FHS) and PlanIT software used internationally. AFS emphasises safety, continuous training, ethical principles and sustainability, promoting the use of modern technologies across its airfield, tank farm and administrative operations.
History
AFS Aviation Fuel Services GmbH was founded in 1986 in Hamburg as a subsidiary jointly owned 50/50 by Lufthansa Commercial Holding GmbH and VEBA Oel AG. Shortly afterwards the company established its first tank operation at Munich-Riem Airport, at the time employing 14 people and operating six vehicles. A year later, in 1987, the refuelling service at Hamburg Airport was opened. In 1988, as a joint venture with Caltex, Frankfurt Fuelling Services was founded. After German reunification, AFS took over the airport tank operations in Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt and Berlin-Schönefeld that had formerly belonged to the VEB Kombinat Minol. In the following years the company began operations at further international airports in Germany and Austria, building out a network of joint ventures and operating companies. Since 2008 the AFS-led joint venture TFSS has operated the postal service's own tanker fleet for EAT and DHL at Leipzig/Halle Airport. In 2003, for the IT services segment, the subsidiary GlobeFuel Systems & Services GmbH was founded in Hamburg. It markets the internationally deployed Fuel Handling System (FHS) software and PlanIT.
