Overview
Avanza Group (officially Avanza by Mobility ADO) is a Spanish holding company specialised in passenger transport by road. It was formed in 2002 through the merger of three established operators: TUZSA (founded 1885, urban transport in Zaragoza), Auto-Res (founded 1943, long-distance coach services) and VITRASA (founded 1968, urban transport in Vigo). The group traces its roots back more than 140 years and today describes itself as a leader in mobility in Spain. Avanza operates urban and interurban bus networks, long-distance coach services, tram and metro systems, and bus stations. It is the leading operator of urban and suburban services in Spain and the second-largest in long-distance coach travel. It also manages several urban tram networks, the Granada metro, and numerous bus terminals, making it the first private operator in bus-station management in the country. Its services extend to Portugal, where it has won urban transport contracts. Since 2013 Avanza has been part of the Mexican multinational Mobility ADO (formerly Grupo ADO), one of the world's largest private passenger transport operators. The acquisition marked a new stage for the Spanish group, which was rebranded as Avanza by Mobility ADO in 2018. Before that, from 2006 to 2013, the company was owned by European private equity firm Doughty Hanson. Avanza's fleet numbers around 2,000 buses, covering more than 145 million kilometres a year and carrying some 250 million passengers. The company employs over 5,000 people. Its headquarters are in Zaragoza, and it continues to expand through contract wins and acquisitions across Spain, including recent entries in the Basque Country and Catalonia.
History
Avanza Group's history spans more than 140 years, with its origins in three separate transport companies. In 1885, Transportes Urbanos de Zaragoza (TUZSA) began operations in Zaragoza, initially dedicated to livestock transport; it launched its first urban bus line in 1951. In 1943, Auto-Res was founded as a family-run transport business, becoming a major long-distance coach operator on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1968, the city of Vigo awarded VITRASA a 25-year concession for urban transport. Grupo Avanza was created in March 2002 through the merger of TUZSA, VITRASA and Auto-Res. That same year, Autobuses Salmantinos also joined the group. In July 2003, Avanza acquired La Sepulvedana, a prestigious regional operator, becoming the second-largest bus company in Spain. However, in 2004 the former owners of La Sepulvedana recovered the Segovia-Madrid line. In 2004 and 2005, Avanza won concessions for urban transport in Segovia and Ourense, respectively. It also sold some concessions from the La Sepulvedana purchase to Samar, with the rest of the group renamed Alisa (Avanza Líneas Interurbanas), later also sold to Samar except for Larrea. In December 2006, the group became 100% owned by European private equity firm Doughty Hanson in a deal valued at €600 million. During that year, Avanza expanded discretionary services through school and employee transport contracts and created new urban services in several municipalities northwest of Madrid. In 2007, the company won the urban transport contract for Soria and acquired CTSA (Corporación Española de Transporte S.A.), owner of numerous urban concessions and the main operator in Málaga. In 2008, Grupo Alosa joined, adding regional and long-distance concessions in Aragón, and Avanza secured numerous contracts for Expo Zaragoza 2008. In 2009, Avanza won the urban transport tender for Covilhã, Portugal, renewed the urban service management in Mataró, and obtained extensions of 4 to 7 years in Terrassa and the regions of Aragón and Castilla y León. That year it also diversified, winning the construction and operation of the Zaragoza tram in a joint venture. In 2010, the urban concession for Ávila was renewed and two new metropolitan service contracts in southern Madrid (Avanza Interurbanos and Avanza Interurbanos del Sur) were added. In 2011, it acquired Etasa, expanding interurban services under the CRTM and becoming the leading interurban operator in the Community of Madrid. In 2013, Avanza won the bus station concession in Marbella and the urban service in Huesca. That same year, the group entered a new stage when it was acquired by Mexican mobility multinational ADO (Autobuses de Oriente). In 2016, ADO decided to unify the numbering of all company buses in Spain. In mid-2017, Avanza, through Llorente Bus S.L., obtained the Madrid-Segovia line concession, one of the highest-revenue routes in the country, though it only began operating it in summer 2018. Also in summer 2017, Autocares Costa Azul, a leading operator in Alicante, joined the group, strengthening its presence in the province with numerous urban and suburban services. In 2018, ADO changed the corporate image, rebranding the company as Avanza by Mobility ADO. In July 2018, Avanza presented the #ViveMadrovia project in Segovia to promote the new Madrid-Segovia line, which it began operating on 8 August 2018. As of June 2018, Avanza had 5,400 employees and a fleet of 2,000 buses covering over 145 million kilometres annually and carrying 250 million passengers. In summer 2019, Avanza acquired Transportes PESA, starting services in the Basque Country. At the end of 2021, Avanza acquired from Mohn S.L. the lines operated by that company in the Barcelona metropolitan area, including urban lines in Castelldefels, Gavá and Viladecans, increasing its presence in Catalonia.
