Overview

Autonomous women's house Zagreb (Croatian: Autonomna ženska kuća Zagreb – žene protiv nasilja nad ženama, AŽKZ) is a feminist non-governmental organization based in Zagreb, Croatia. Founded on 14 December 1990, it opened the first shelter for women survivors of violence in Eastern Europe. The organization operates a confidential shelter whose address has been declared an official secret by the Government of Croatia, as well as a legal and psychological counselling centre for women and children victims of violence. The counselling centre, known as the Women's Counselling Centre (Žensko savjetovalište), offers free, confidential and anonymous legal advice and psychological support. The organization can be reached via a free helpline at 116 016 on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00. AŽKZ was co-founded by feminist activist and volunteer Neva Tölle. Over the years it has developed from a volunteer-run squatted space into a professional project employing trained staff and volunteers. Its activities include providing safe accommodation, legal advice, mediation with institutions, public awareness campaigns, and participation in international networks against violence against women. The organization has received several awards, including the City of Zagreb Award in 2000 and the Velimir Terzić Award in 2000, and was a first prize winner of the Erste Foundation Award for social inclusion in 2011.

History

Autonomous women's house Zagreb was founded on 14 December 1990, when a group of activists opened the first shelter for women survivors of violence in Eastern Europe. It was established at a time when violence against women and children was not discussed in Croatian society. Due to lack of government support, the first shelter space was a squatted property owned by the City of Zagreb, where for the first three years only volunteers and activists worked. Over the years, AŽKZ developed into a professional project with trained staff and volunteers. The core activity of AŽKZ is providing support and assistance to women and their children exposed to physical and psychological violence in the family, as well as other forms of patriarchal violence, regardless of nationality, religion, marital status, age, skin colour, sexual orientation, or any other type of discrimination. Through continuous professional work, Autonomous women's house Zagreb influences changes in institutional practices in the treatment of victims of domestic violence, legislation regarding women's rights, and changes in public opinion. Within AŽKZ, the Women's Counselling Centre operates, providing free, confidential and anonymous legal advice and psychological assistance for women and children victims of violence. The organization has published several handbooks, including 'Ženska prava – priručnik za zlostavljane žene' (1994, 2000), 'Kako izaći iz nasilne veze – Priručnik ženama za život bez nasilja' (2003), and 'Gradski vodič za žene: zagrebački vodič kroz socijalne usluge za žene koje su preživjele nasilje' (2009). It has received numerous awards, including the City of Zagreb Award in 2000 for establishing the first shelter for women and children victims of abuse in that part of Europe, the Velimir Terzić Award in 2000 for exceptional contributions to the development of democracy and the rule of law, and the first prize of the Erste Foundation for social inclusion of marginalized groups in 2011.
