Overview
Autobus AG Liestal (AAGL) is a Swiss public transport company headquartered in Liestal in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. It traces its origins to 1905, when the Automobilgesellschaft Liestal-Reigoldswil AG was founded and began operating the oldest licensed bus line in Switzerland, between Liestal and Reigoldswil. The company was renamed Autobus AG Liestal in 1930 and has since grown into the principal provider of local and regional bus services in and around Liestal, complemented by the Waldenburgerbahn and two PostAuto lines. AAGL operates a network of eleven lines covering more than 130 kilometres, connecting Reigoldswil with Basel and Lupsingen with Kaiseraugst, and linking Liestal and Pratteln with surrounding municipalities. Services run on a half-hourly frequency for much of the day, with some hourly service in the evenings and on Sundays, and additional peak-hour trips on selected routes. The company has been a founding member of the Northwestern Switzerland tariff association (Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz) since 1986. Beyond its core bus operations, AAGL has expanded through subsidiaries. Autobus AG Liestal Dienstleistungen and Autobus AG Liestal Öffentlicher Verkehr cover extra trips, petrol station operations and car wash facilities for vehicles ranging from small cars to 40-tonne trucks. The travel business, Autobus AG Liestal Reisen, was spun off in 2015 as the independent à la carte-reisen AG. The company is a privately held Aktiengesellschaft; its 121st general meeting was held in June 2026 in Liestal, where shareholders approved the 2025 annual accounts with a profit of CHF 87,383. In spring 2026 AAGL introduced electric buses and equipped its entire fleet with additional markings for visually impaired passengers, a first in northwestern Switzerland.
History
The company was founded in 1905 as Automobilgesellschaft Liestal-Reigoldswil AG, when it began operating the oldest licensed bus line in Switzerland between Liestal and Reigoldswil. The villages said farewell to the horse-drawn post. In 1907 the company recorded its first 'satisfactory business result' and set up its own workshop. In 1911 the maximum speed for motor vehicles was raised from 10 to 18 km/h on flat terrain and from 30 to 40 km/h in open country. During World War I (1914–1918) the company temporarily stopped issuing return tickets because it could not guarantee the return journey, and petrol was occasionally stretched with petroleum. By 1917 there were already 66 private motor cars and 52 motorcycles in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, while home weaving flourished in the Fünflibertal (Bubendorf, Ziefen, Reigoldswil) with 800 looms in operation. During the economic crisis of the 1920s and 1930s the company showed flexibility, reducing fares for the unemployed and introducing extra services for workers as more people commuted to work. In 1928 the Reigoldswil–Liestal route was extended to Basel. In 1929 a trailer with 34 seats and 15 standing places was acquired, forming the first automobile train in Switzerland. In 1930 the company was renamed Autobus AG Liestal and bought and converted the promising Hofgut Wasserfallen estate, though a plan to build an access road failed. In 1934, as National Socialism rose in Germany, city dwellers from Basel began turning away from the Baden hinterland and the Black Forest and discovered the Baselbiet for leisure excursions, benefiting the company. In 1937 the Federal Council ordered a currency devaluation. In 1956 the gondola lift from Reigoldswil to Wasserfallen (Wasserfallenbahn), built by AAGL, opened; it was donated to an independent foundation in 1994. In 1975/76 regional transport began in Liestal (and its agglomeration) and in Rheinfelden. In 1986 AAGL became a founding member of the Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz (Northwestern Switzerland tariff association). In December 2009 lines 84–86 were transferred to PostAuto Nordwestschweiz, which in return handed over its partial stake in line 83 and full ownership of line 72 to AAGL. The regional bus network in Liestal (lines 75–78) has changed frequently over the years. In 2015 the travel business, Autobus AG Liestal Reisen (coach travel, minibus rental), was spun off into the independent à la carte-reisen AG, which remained at AAGL's location until the end of 2024 and now operates from Eptingen. In spring 2026 AAGL introduced electric buses and equipped its entire fleet with additional markings on the front door and all priority seats in the first row for visually impaired passengers, a first in northwestern Switzerland, developed in close cooperation with the Swiss Blind and Visually Impaired Association (sbv). In June 2026 the 121st General Meeting was held in the new Stadtsaal Liestal, where shareholders approved the 2025 annual accounts with a profit of CHF 87,383. In 2026 AAGL also sold its car wash facility to Fritz Meyer AG; from 1 October 2026 AutoWasch became AVIA Carwash Liestal.
