Overview

The Austrian Cancer Aid (Österreichische Krebshilfe) is an Austrian aid agency. Its website provides information on cancer prevention and early detection, individual cancer types and therapies, and offers a counselling and support service for patients and relatives. It also funds projects, studies and work whose results benefit all Austrians. Its history traces back to the founding of the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Erforschung und Bekämpfung der Krebskrankheit, whose constituent meeting took place on 17 December 1910.

History

The history of the Austrian Cancer Aid traces back to a letter written by the physician Prof. Dr. Julius Hochenegg to his colleague Prof. Dr. Anton Eiselsberg on a dull November day in 1909, in which he wrote that the distress of cancer patients was growing and that something had to be done to alleviate it. This led to the constituent meeting of the 'k.u.k. Gesellschaft zur Erforschung und Bekämpfung der Krebskrankheit' on 17 December 1910. Among the most important points were extensive public education about cancer in a popular sense and alleviating the distress of cancer patients. On 20 December 1910 this new society was reported to the police, which was the birth of the Austrian Cancer Aid. At the constituent assembly, Hofrat Prof. Dr. Anton Freiherr von Eiselsberg was elected president, Hofrat Prof. Dr. Richard Paltauf first vice-president, and Hofrat Prof. Dr. Julius Hochenegg second vice-president. From its founding to today, the organization developed from home visits and small sums of money to professional immediate financial assistance and 63 cancer aid counselling centres.
