Australian Unity traces its origins to 1840, when eight people came together in a Melbourne pub to form a friendly society to help fellow Australians in times of hardship. The organisation was formed by the merger of the Australian Natives Association Friendly Society (ANA) and the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) in 1993. Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows was a fraternal order founded in Manchester, England in 1810; in 1840 Manchester Unity IOOF was founded in Victoria and the first lodge was established in Adelaide. Since the 1993 merger, Australian Unity has grown to an organisation of over 10,000 employees across Australia, serving more than 375,000 members across the areas of health, wealth and care. The company states it has been measuring the real wellbeing of Australians with Deakin University since 2000 through the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index.
