History
Australian Native Landscapes (ANL) was launched in March 1971 by Patrick Soars, who has directed its growth into a diverse and environmentally conscious organisation. In 1976, Patrick was joined by his wife Sharon as co-director. The company began operations as a landscape contractor and pioneered the Australiana landscape theme by introducing innovation and many new products to the industry. This innovation led to specialised projects such as the Port Botany foreshore rehabilitation and later the Kooragang Island reclamation. The recognition and experience gained from these projects established ANL as a major landscape contractor. ANL continued to expand in the commercial sector, completing major projects such as the IBM Headquarters, the Chinese Gardens at Darling Harbour, Sydney's Parallel Third Runway, and Olympic projects including the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park. The 1980s and 1990s were a period of unparalleled growth in the company's landscape division, setting the foundation for ANL's reputation as a supplier of quality horticultural products. This reputation was reinforced by supplying organic soil and mulches for most major large-scale projects in Sydney, including the Circular Quay redevelopment and First Fleet Park. In the early 1980s, the company consolidated its composting operations and invested significantly in a new pine bark grading and composting facility at Badgerys Creek. In each of the first two years of production at this facility, ANL processed over 100,000 cubic metres of feedstock. In 1990, ANL revolutionised the composting industry by developing and patenting the 'Nitrotop' process, which accelerates the composting of organic materials. The company also offers environmental products and services, including organics recycling, environmental management systems, and products for environmental remediation. ANL continues to operate as a private company headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales.
