Overview

Aumüller Druck GmbH & Co. KG, also known as Aumüller Druck Regensburg, is a German offset printing company based in Regensburg. Founded in 1913 as a newspaper publisher and book and art printer by Georg Aumüller, the company has remained in family ownership for over a century and is now led by the fourth and fifth generations of the Aumüller family. It specializes in industrial commercial offset printing, producing catalogs, magazines, brochures, flyers, and folded leaflets, with particular strength in projects involving many variants and language versions. The company operates from a production site in the Haslbach industrial area of Regensburg, covering approximately 11,500 square meters. Aumüller Druck is known for its close technological partnership with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, frequently serving as a field-test site for new presses and software. It has also collaborated with Flyeralarm, Germany's largest online printer, since 2008, producing perfect-bound brochures and hardcover books. In 2014, it formed the +PrintAllianz Peschke+Aumüller with Peschke Druck, though it sold its stake in 2020. The company emphasizes environmental responsibility, with over 30 years of sustainability efforts and a long-term environmental management partnership with Intechnica. Today, Aumüller Druck employs around 110 people and continues to invest in modern printing technology, including the recent installation of a Canon iX 3100 inkjet press in 2026 and plans for a second Heidelberg Plate-to-Unit machine in 2027. The company remains privately held and family-owned, with Volker Dollinger serving as managing director since 2021.

History

Aumüller Druck was founded on 11 July 1913 as G(eor)g Aumüller & Sohn Buch- und Kunstdruckerei mit Zeitungsverlag OHG, when Georg Aumüller and his son Josef acquired the newspaper 'Regensburger Neueste Nachrichten' along with its printing house at Am Römling 12 in Regensburg. The newspaper, originally founded in 1891 as 'Bayerischer Volksbote' and renamed in 1911, was the organ of Regensburg liberals during the Weimar years. In 1928, a new industrial building was erected in the courtyard at Am Römling 12a. By the mid-1920s, the paper reached a circulation peak of 6,000 copies. In 1932, the company was renamed Georg Aumüller & Sohn GmbH. After the Nazi takeover, the liberal newspaper was forced to cease publication; its last issue appeared on 30 September 1933. Following the death of Josef Aumüller in 1937, company shares passed to the heirs Betty and Georg Aumüller in the third generation. The company remained at Am Römling 12 until 1972. After World War II, Georg Aumüller (1921–2012) received a license from the US military government to continue the Georg Aumüller & Sohn Verlag, Buch & Kunstdruckerei. In 1954, the company was converted into a Kommanditgesellschaft (limited partnership). The first offset printing presses were acquired in 1965. In 1972, a modern new building with 3,000 m² of single-story office and production space was occupied in the Haslbach industrial area of Regensburg. Since 1981, all employees have been able to participate as silent partners in the company. In 1994, Aumüller Druck commissioned the first 8-color press in Bavaria, and the office wing was expanded the following year. Georg Aumüller retired in 1996 and was awarded the University Medal 'Bene merenti' by the University of Regensburg; he had already received the Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1993. Since 1996, the company has been led by the fourth generation, brothers Stefan and Christian Aumüller, who joined the firm in 1987 after technical apprenticeships and business studies. Also in 1996, the world's first 10-color press from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen was put into operation at Aumüller. In 2000, Computer to Plate was introduced in prepress. In 2001, production space was expanded to 4,700 m². In 2003, Stefan Aumüller was elected honorary chairman of the board of Fogra, the independent research institute of the printing industry in Munich. After closing its Munich production site in 2004, the company refocused on Regensburg and expanded its warehouse in 2005. In 2006, it converted to the legal form of GmbH & Co. KG. In 2008, it acquired a 3,000 m² neighboring plot with a production hall for perfect-bound brochures, and in 2011, a new 3,000 m² multifunctional hall was built, bringing total production area to 11,500 m². In late summer 2001, Aumüller Druck took over the Munich printing company Dengler & Rauner with around 50 employees. Due to the economic downturn following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the printing company suffered significant revenue losses and was closed again in 2004. Since the mid-1990s, Aumüller Druck has maintained a close development partnership with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, conducting many field tests for presses and software. Since 2008, it has collaborated intensively with Flyeralarm, Germany's largest online printer, producing perfect-bound brochures and hardcover books in offset. In 2014, Aumüller entered the +PrintAllianz Peschke+Aumüller with Peschke Druck (G. Peschke Druckerei GmbH), acquiring a minority stake in Peschke and jointly building an 8,000 m² facility in Parsdorf near Munich. The alliance had over 70 printing units combined. In 2020, Aumüller Druck sold its shares in Peschke Druck. In 2021, Volker Dollinger became managing director. In 2020, Maria Aumüller (5th generation) joined the company, and in 2027, Josef Aumüller (5th generation) is set to join. The company continues to invest in technology, installing its 14th XL press with Plate-to-Unit in 2024 and entering inkjet printing with a Canon iX 3100 in 2026.
