The company states it looks back on more than 100 years of history in heating technology and describes itself as one of the leading heating technology manufacturers. Its history began in 1919 when August Brötje senior founded the BRÖTJE Werke in a former cannery; the first steel radiator rolled off the line in 1925, and steel heating boilers were added from 1936.

August Brötje GmbH looks back on more than 100 years of experience in heating technology. The history began in 1919 when August Brötje senior, the son of a master carpenter who had trained in mechanical engineering and was classified as unfit for war due to a hearing condition, founded the BRÖTJE Werke in a former cannery. From the start, machine repairs were not to remain the main business; August Brötje senior dreamed of his own factory and had the idea of manufacturing steel radiators. In 1925 the first unit rolled off the line. From 1936 steel heating boilers were also produced, and later heating and cooking boilers as well. August Brötje senior died at only 44 years old; his wife Erna Brötje became owner and led the company together with the authorized signatory Wilhelm Behrens. After the end of the Second World War, August Brötje junior took over the business, orienting himself largely on his father's leadership style. In 1949, 200 employees already worked at BRÖTJE, and the expansion of the company premises as well as the expansion of (inter)national business relationships created favorable conditions for steady growth. In 1949 the August-Brötje-Straße was created between the factory grounds behind the railway station and the newly built workers' settlement.
