Overview
Auerbergland is an inter-municipal alliance (Auerbergland e.V.) of fourteen rural municipalities in Bavaria, Germany, grouped around the 1,055-metre Auerberg. Founded in 1992 by eight communities, it has since expanded to include municipalities across three districts — Landsberg am Lech, Weilheim-Schongau, and Ostallgäu — and two administrative regions, Upper Bavaria and Swabia. The alliance promotes integrated rural development, regional tourism, and cultural cohesion, operating under the Auerbergland brand. It runs the Museumsverbund Auerbergland (a network of nine museums), coordinates LEADER-funded projects, and has received the European Village Renewal Award. The portal website serves as a hub for cycling, hiking, and cultural tourism in the region.
History
Auerbergland was founded in 1992 as an inter-municipal alliance of eight rural communities around the Auerberg in Bavaria, about 80 km southwest of Munich. The founding municipalities were Bernbeuren, Burggen, Ingenried, Lechbruck am See, Roßhaupten, Schwabbruck, Schwabsoien, and Stötten am Auerberg. A key feature of the alliance is that its member municipalities span three different districts — Weilheim-Schongau, Ostallgäu, and Landsberg am Lech — and two administrative regions, Upper Bavaria and Swabia. On 1 January 2001, Altenstadt, Hohenfurch, and Rieden am Forggensee joined. In early 2007, Prem and Steingaden joined, bringing the total to 13. On 21 January 2015, Kinsau became the 14th member municipality. The alliance aims to strengthen rural areas through an integrated rural development concept, leveraging regional potential to boost the economy, tourism, and social cohesion. The Auerberg is positioned not as a separating element but as an identity marker and tourism brand. After the LEADER+ funding program ended, Auerbergland partnered with the Pfaffenwinkel tourism association to form the LEADER action group AL-P Auerbergland-Pfaffenwinkel. The alliance also established the Museumsverbund Auerbergland, a network of nine museums, and received the European Village Renewal Award.
