Overview

Auchan Noyelles-Godault, also known as Aushopping Noyelles, is a large French shopping and retail park located in Noyelles-Godault and Hénin-Beaumont in the Pas-de-Calais department. It is anchored by an Auchan hypermarket and includes a shopping gallery of more than one hundred stores, plus around fifty independent retail units in the surrounding commercial zone. The site was inaugurated on 24 May 1972 and was built to serve the Douai–Lens–Arras area. For many years its hypermarket was the largest Auchan hypermarket in the world, until 2014, and it has been described as a 'record-breaking shopping centre'. The hypermarket had a commercial area of 21,850 m² and generated €247.2 million in revenue in 2010, ranking third among regional stores and tenth nationally. The shopping centre attracted 29 million visitors in the twelve months from June 2021 to June 2022, placing it second in France by footfall. The site has been expanded and renovated several times, notably in 2004 and 2019, and now operates under the Aushopping brand with 140 shops, restaurants and leisure outlets.

History

The shopping centre was inaugurated on 24 May 1972 as Auchan-Liétard, built by Groupe Auchan on a 15-hectare site near the N43 road to serve the Hénin-Carvin district and the Douai, Lens and Arras areas. It followed the opening of Englos-les-Géants in 1969, the first French hypermarket-based shopping centre with a commercial gallery. The site benefited from its proximity to the N43 and later from access to the A1 and A21 motorways. In the 1980s, various improvements were made to the hypermarket, its gallery and surrounding specialised stores. The gallery was renovated in late 1995, and in November 1999 access from the A1 was improved with works financed by Immochan, allowing exit 17 to lead directly to the retail zone. In the early 2000s, a dispute arose between Auchan and the departmental commercial equipment commission over a refused extension permit, but on 26 September 2000 the national commission granted an extension of the gallery and the creation of several stores. After a year of works and a €17 million investment, the new centre was inaugurated on 23 November 2004 by Hervé Mottin, president of Immochan France. The gallery expanded from 4,792 m² to 14,788 m², adding thirty new shops to the existing fifty-two, and the car park doubled in size. The opening of an IKEA store in Hénin-Beaumont on 20 June 2007 led to an additional 3,706 m² for the Auchan hypermarket, bringing its commercial area to 21,850 m². An Auchan Drive opened on 15 August 2011. After a refusal by the departmental commission in January 2014 for a gallery extension from 9,000 to 18,000 m², the national commission approved the extension in May 2014. In 2019, after two years of works, the shopping centre was enlarged again: the gallery now extends over 80,000 m² and 55 new stores opened, bringing the total to 135 boutiques. Footfall increased by 21% between June 2021 and June 2022, reaching 29 million visitors, making the retail zone the second busiest in France behind Plan de Campagne near Marseille. The hypermarket had a revenue of €247.2 million in 2010, ranking third regionally and tenth nationally. The centre operates under the Aushopping brand and offers 140 shops, restaurants and leisure outlets.
