Overview

Au Stekerlapatte is a brasserie restaurant located in the heart of the Marolles district in central Brussels, Belgium, at Priestersstraat 4, near the Porte de Hal, the Louise district, and the Sablon. The name "Stekerlapatte" is Brussels dialect for stickleback. The establishment was founded in 1974 and is recognized as a meeting point for artists and a local gastronomic institution. It serves varied brasserie cuisine and Belgian classics in a decor of wood, mirrors, and two bar counters that evoke its long history. The restaurant has weathered changes in ownership and periods of closure, including bankruptcies in 2005 and 2010, and was revived in late 2014 by Luc Wittevrouw. It continues to operate with the ambition of remaining "The Gourmet Reference Made in Marolles."

History

Au Stekerlapatte is a restaurant in the Marolles district of Brussels. The original owners were Daniël Van Avermaet and his wife Jeanine, who in 1979 transformed the former working-class pub "Bij Katche" into a restaurant. "Stekerlapatte" is Brussels dialect for stickleback. It is located at Priestersstraat 4, a street formerly known as the "Poepegang" because of its many brothels, all now disappeared. The small restaurant offered traditional dishes such as Brussels "bloempanch" (blood sausage) and became a well-known address, partly thanks to the fame Daniël Van Avermaet gained through his radio and television appearances. It was visited by artists and journalists, Dutch- and French-speakers, as well as ordinary Brussels residents. After Daniël's death in 2003, his widow Jeanine kept the restaurant open, but in the summer of 2005 she had to file for bankruptcy. She sought a buyer, and in March 2006 it was reopened by new owners. The new manager was Mrs. Carine Barmoshe, replaced in 2007 by Ugo De Luca. The restaurant was declared bankrupt on 13 July 2010. At the end of 2014, the famous restaurant was revived by Luc Wittevrouw. The official website states that the restaurant has been known and recognized since 1974 as a meeting point for artists and as one of the institutions of local gastronomy, and that it is making a fresh start and aims to remain "The Gourmet Reference Made in Marolles."
