Overview

au Financial Service Corporation (auフィナンシャルサービス株式会社) is a Japanese payments and financial services company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, and a wholly owned subsidiary of au Financial Holdings Corporation within the KDDI Group. It operates consumer and corporate cashless services centered on the au PAY brand, including au PAY code payments, the au PAY Card credit card, au PAY Smart Loan, au PAY point investment, gift cards, B-Charge corporate transfers, au PAY salary receipt and the NESTA next-generation payment platform. Its stated mission is to connect payments and finance into a single experience and to provide the most familiar cashless services to customers. The present company is the second incarnation of au Financial Service. The first au Financial Service was established in February 2014 as KDDI Financial Service Corporation, began payment agency operations in June 2014, started credit card operations in October 2014 and was renamed au Financial Service Corporation in June 2020. Separately, au Payment Corporation traced its roots to WebMoney, an early Japanese prepaid electronic money service, which was listed on JASDAQ NEO in 2007, became a wholly owned KDDI subsidiary in 2011 and was renamed au Payment in April 2020. On July 1, 2026, au Payment and au Financial Service merged to form the new au Financial Service Corporation, which also moved its head office to Takanawa, Minato, within KDDI's headquarters. The company's business spans three pillars: payment services, financial services and cashless solutions. Payment services include au PAY code payments and the au PAY Card, with card membership reaching 10 million in December 2024. Financial services include au PAY Smart Loan and au PAY point investment. Cashless solutions serve corporate customers through au PAY gift cards, B-Charge, au PAY salary receipt and NESTA. The company also continues to develop services such as overseas use of au PAY code payments and the integration of au PAY with au Kantan Kessai under the au PAY brand. As part of KDDI's financial business, au Financial Service plays a central role in the group's strategy to link telecommunications and finance. Its services are marketed primarily in Japan and are closely tied to the au brand and Ponta points ecosystem.

History

The history of au Financial Service involves two corporate lineages that merged in 2026: au Payment Corporation, descended from WebMoney, and the first au Financial Service Corporation. The WebMoney lineage began on March 24, 1988, with the establishment of SG Tsusho Co., Ltd., a company focused on research, development, manufacture and sale of computer systems. In February 1999 it changed its name to WebMoney Corporation. On May 10, 1999, it acquired the WebMoney business from IF Co., Ltd. and began issuing, selling and providing electronic payment services for the prepaid electronic money 'WebMoney'. In July 2003, parent company Last Summer Holdings sold its WebMoney shares to Faith, making WebMoney a subsidiary of Faith. On December 6, 2007, WebMoney listed on the JASDAQ NEO market. In October 2010, following the integration of Hercules and JASDAQ, it moved to JASDAQ Growth. In June 2011, KDDI announced a tender offer for WebMoney, aiming to acquire more than two-thirds of outstanding shares and eventually make it a wholly owned subsidiary; Faith supported the offer. The tender offer succeeded in July 2011, and the parent company moved to KDDI on July 19, 2011. WebMoney was delisted from JASDAQ on October 11, 2011, and KDDI made it a wholly owned subsidiary on October 14, 2011. On April 1, 2019, its parent company moved from KDDI to the newly established au Financial Holdings. On April 1, 2020, it changed its name to au Payment Corporation. On March 31, 2026, it transferred the WebMoney business to BitCash through an absorption-type split. The first au Financial Service Corporation was established in February 2014 as KDDI Financial Service Corporation. It began payment agency operations in June 2014, inherited the au Jibun Card business in September 2014, started credit card operations in October 2014 and began agency operations for Jibun Bank (later au Jibun Bank) in October 2014. In April 2016 it moved its head office to Mark Light Toranomon. In April 2019 it became a consolidated subsidiary of au Financial Holdings and began the au WALLET Smart Loan business. In June 2020 it changed its name to au Financial Service Corporation. Meanwhile, au Payment continued to develop services. In April 2014 it issued the rechargeable prepaid card with brand prepaid function 'WebMoney Card'. In May 2014, jointly with KDDI and Okinawa Cellular Telephone, it issued the 'au WALLET Card'. In November 2017 it registered as a funds transfer operator under the Payment Services Act. In January 2020 the 'au WALLET Prepaid Card' was renamed 'au PAY Prepaid Card'. In April 2020 the company changed its name from WebMoney Corporation to au Payment Corporation. In May 2022 it launched the corporate au PAY charge service 'B-Charge'. In April 2023 it began joint operation of 'au PAY' with KDDI, and in October 2023 began joint provision of 'au PAY point investment' with KDDI. In January 2025 it registered as a financial instruments intermediary and a life insurance intermediary; in February 2025 it obtained permission as a bank agent; in March 2025 it registered as a non-life insurance intermediary; in April 2025 it received designation from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare as a funds transfer operator supporting digital salary payment and launched 'au PAY salary receipt'; in June 2025 it integrated 'au PAY' and 'au Kantan Kessai' under the au PAY brand; in December 2025 it registered as a comprehensive credit purchase intermediary and credit card number handling contract concluding business; in January 2026 it registered as a money lender; and in March 2026 it made 'au PAY (code payment)' available overseas and succeeded the WebMoney business. On July 1, 2026, au Payment Corporation and au Financial Service Corporation merged, and the new au Financial Service Corporation was formed, with its head office moved to Takanawa, Minato, within KDDI's headquarters. The merged company continues to operate au PAY, au PAY Card and related financial services.
