Overview

Attingal Municipality is a municipal corporation in the Chiranyinkeezhu taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the older municipalities in the region, having been established in 1922, before the formation of the state of Kerala. The municipality administers the town of Attingal, which has historical significance as the seat of the former Attingal kingdom (Attingal Swaroopam), a princely state closely associated with the Travancore royal family. The town is situated about 23 metres above sea level and is bounded by two rivers, the Vamanapuram River and the Mamam River. Attingal Municipality provides civic services to its residents, including sanitation, water supply, roads, and public health. It is classified as a public-sector entity under the state government of Kerala.

History

Attingal Municipality was established in 1922, making it one of the older municipalities in Kerala, predating the formation of the state itself. The town of Attingal has a much deeper history, however, as it was the seat of the Attingal Swaroopam, a princely state that had close ties with the Travancore royal family. The Attingal queens, who resided in the Sreepadom Palace, played a significant role in the governance of Travancore, often leading the administration when the kings were away. The town is also known for the Attingal Revolt (Attingal Kalapam) of 1721, an early organized uprising against the British East India Company. The municipality has since grown into a modern urban local body, providing essential services to its residents.
