History

The history of ATMOS MedizinTechnik begins in 1888 with the acquisition of the Kaiser Friedrich Pharmacy at Karlstraße 20a in Berlin by Dr. Ernst Silten (family name until 1918: Silberstein), a Jewish scientist and pharmacist born in Königsberg. Silten thought beyond merely selling medicine, and the pharmacy became the birthplace of many revolutionary ideas in medical technology. In 1904, Dr. Silten developed a pressure and flow control valve for oxygen that was given the name ATMOS. In the following years, a small factory was founded for manufacturing chemical-pharmaceutical preparations as well as pharmaceutical and medical devices. In 1918, a general agency agreement granted the Kaiser Friedrich Pharmacy exclusive distribution rights for medical equipment from Drägerwerk in Lübeck. In 1927, the first 'suction pressure and hot air device for medical and especially dental purposes' was patented, marking the birth of ATMOS's core competency in suction technology. Over the following decades, the company grew and evolved into an internationally active manufacturer of medical technology devices and products. The ATMOS Group now employs over 300 people worldwide, with 15 subsidiaries and representative offices in India and Colombia, as well as approximately 70 national agencies. The company remains headquartered in the Black Forest region of Germany and continues to develop application-oriented solutions for medical suction, ENT, gynecology, and swallowing diagnostics.
